Steam Running Game Issues! HELP!

hey everyone! Since steam has a horrible customer service (or lack of existence of one)
I need the communities help!
With a few of my games including Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 & 2. The game will no longer open.
it says it's running in the background when I begin running it, however no game actually appears on the screen.

I CAN NOT close the program even when uninstalling it, and steam will say i can not start a new program while one is running (even though its not running or even installed)
I have to physically shut down my computer / restart it to even attempt another game.

DOES ANYONE. know how to fix this?
Steams customer service will do nothing. (since its all bots)
Atari's game support no longer exists.
there are no youtube videos on this...
I have no idea how I can play the games again that I have purchased and been playing many hours of anymore.

did you try restarting your computer?
If so:

Open task manager by searching for it in the start menu or by pressing ctrl-alt-delete all at the same time

when in task manager, find steam and close any instance of it you can find.

also close rct.exe if you find it running on task manager.


Another question: did this game run on your current pc previously, or are you using a new pc since then?

I always have to restart my computer or else the program refuses to close.

Everytime i do task manager NOTHING is there... litterally nothing. steam says its running and I can't run another program while one is running. but task manager shows NO steam & No RCT.exe
Current PC. I havent used another one. it just Stopped working and doing this glitch thing.
I have never seen it happen before.
Does this for a few other games as well.

I have the same issue. To close you have to terminate the RCT.exe and rundll32

I have always encountered this problem with old games, "stronghold crusader" for example. I already thought that it might be with this game that I just bought for retro games.

What OS are you using? Win 10? 7?

Oddly enough, it seems win 7 has more trouble running this than win 10, usually it would be reversed

This seems to do the same for me for RCT and for Morrowind.
Now if I try open RCT first, it will not play at all, but if I then try to play on MORROWIND it lets me.

So I tried it in reverse, I opened morrowind first after turning on my laptop and HUZZUH it doesn’t work, I can’t open morrowind. So what I did then I tried to open RTC and it worked!
So now I use this little trick if I wanna play RCT,
Just open another old game that does the same thing first. Depending on what you want to play.

Run RCT.exe directly, you'll have to run it twice, then end rundll32.exe via the task manager after you get it running. Try GOG next time, especially for older games, they actually put some extra effort into getting games to run unlike Steam.

THAT FIXED THE ISSUE! I would not let me run it twice at the same time HOWEVER... I would run the game. it would silent crash. then I would end it Via Rundll32.exe and it Permanently Fixed the Issue!

I have the same issue that it wont let me start. It is running in the background but nothing happens. I am not sure what you mean with running RCT.exe directly? I have installed the game via steam and cant seem to find these applications. Where can i find it?

Does Anyone know how can i get this game to work in wide-screen ? its just windowed :(
