Make sure you have direct play enabled. I assume you meant Windows 10 and I'm 100% sure you meet the system requirements for a game in the 1990s. I'm going to quote instructions from a website here:
1. Go to the control panel.
2. find/ open "Programs and Features" then press the "Turn windows features on or off"... it's on the left hand side.
3. Put a tick in the direct play... look in the L's for legacy, then restart your system.
4. It also helps to have compatibility mode enabled. Also if you are alt tabbing in the game and it feels like your steam or comp is frozen just spam the left and right mouse buttons. You will be good to go.

What if it's already ticked and it's still not working with compatibility mode enabled?

I checked a lot of sites and couldn't find a solution! Should have just checked here in the first place. Thanks for the fix. Works great now.

Thank you! :) This also worked for me.

If a user states that they are using Windows 11, why do you "assume" the they're using Windows 10. It doesn't make sense. I'm having the same issue, and I've tried all the solutions for Compatibility and Direct Play has been enabled. I'm lost.

Same thing here.

Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RollerCoaster Tycoon Deluxe, right click on the RCT icon, show more options, properties, go to compatibility tab and check to run in compatibility mode for Windows 98/Windows Me. Finally got it to work after several attempts in the past.

EDIT: Never mind. Won't go past the loading screen!

EDIT 2: Okay, I got past the loading screen after several tries. LOL.

EDIT 3: I also had to tick "run as administrator" and 640/480 screen resolution.

EDIT 4: It will run for about 5 minutes and then it will kick me off.

I'm on Windows 11 24H2 and have it working.

1. Navigate to the installation folder
2. Right click on RCT.EXE
3. Click Properties
4. Select the Compatibility tab
5. Turn on 'Compatibility mode' for Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
6. Check 'Reduced color mode' and select 16-bit
7. Click OK
8. Run from Steam

This was a pretty safe assumption at the time this topic was posted (2017, four years before Windows 11 was released).
