lord Elrond and the moon alter

I have got to Rivendell and need to see lord Elrond, though there are no map hints, at a gate with 2 elf guards who say "lord Elrond has requested your presence at the moon alter." then nothing happens and the gate won't open, am I missing something or is this a bug?

You should follow the "ghost" studs to your new destination.

but they go through the gate, the gate that the guards will not open

Sorry, but I don't understand your problem. Firstly, is this part of the story line when the whole party arrives at Rivendell after they were chased by the Orcs on Wargs? Because if it is, there are no guards telling you to see Elrond at the Moon altar. After the initial cut scenes at Rivendell are finished, you get ghost studs leading you to the Moon altar. There are no guards telling you to do so, that is why I'm confused. Are you sure we are talking about the Rivendell and not perhaps Thranduil kingdom? There are two guards standing in front of the gate not letting you in until you change time from day to night.

the problem was i had clicked on a map icon by mistake and teh trail was leading me wrongly
