this might sound a little dumb, but can anybody tell me how to zoom out in the map??

Do you try buttons what rotate camera in game? this buttons allow you to zoom in or out map scale)

@ wiegervb Thank you thank you, I hated the fact the map was too close, so following your suggestion in map I pressed the L key on my keyboard and it zoomed out, awesome makes it so easy now to choose a destination

I'm waiting for my new Steam Controller, it's hopeless playing Lego Hobbit using a keyboard there are too many areas where you just cannot achieve the quests as the running jumpimg misses the target, a keyboard does not have the right line of sight and you just fall.
