Save game does not save location

I finished all the story levels and I'm now collecting minikits and so forth. Every time I 'save and continue' or 'save and exit' in a free play level I end up back outside the entrance to Erebor. Also if I save at a dwarf statue I still will end up at that location when I load the game again.

It's always the same two characters too - Bilbo and Gandalf. Is this by design or does my save game have a problem?

The number of studs, minikits, blueprints, mithril bricks, is saved just fine.

Yes, that si correct. Every time you start game you will start from the same location (i.e. Erebor entrance).

It seems like a strange design choice. Most games save where you were when you saved, or at least as close to where you were as possible.

I just experienced this as well, bought this great game played for 53 hours completed the Story Mode then went on to play the fun exploring stuff. When I saved and exited and restarted it it seems to be missing the maks on the map that show what I have picked up like the white blocks, in the achievements there a lot missing? Once we reload and it starts at the entrance in teh snow do we have to leave story mode even though it's done or do we have to select freemode now? Checking I still have all the characters I bought and the blacksmith tools I made?

If I remember correctly once you complete story mode you are in freeplay mode, but you can go back into story mode by selecting any of the chapter markers (scrolls). It gives you the choice to play story or free mode. Once you've completed the story though, there is no reason to choose story mode.

Also I think, although I could be wrong, when you pick something up it gets removed from the map, so the only things that are displaying should be the quests/blocks that you still have to complete.

I've now gone back through all the levels in freemode, when we choose a level it shows on the menu each chapter in that level what we have found, . Whenever we find anything or achieve anything a blue circle appears that stone that is an auto save.
This game is amazing with quirky quests appearing. Yesterday I went back into a cave and helped a miner make a mine cart but it just went around in circles so he made that into a ride press U and then jump through hoops lol I got 2 white bricks out of that. Plus great fun
