It's helpful for doing events only active at night or day before you finish the game.
It is pointless. Trust me. Just focus on the story then come back. Doing it otherwise is very limiting (for example, can't change time of day). I "wasted" like 10 hours I think. Took 18 hours to finish the story mode when it can be done in 8 hours cause like you, I wanted to do the quests and collect bricks. It was very inefficient though.
The campfires actually unlock just before you do the Barrels Out of Bond level, as you can initially only enter the Halls of Thranduil at night.
