Hello, I've bought the Hobbit Desolation of Smaug dvd and inside was a code for this lego game to unlock Sauron as a playable character. I won't really buy this game so I am giving away this code to someone who would want it for their game

Anyways, did you use the cheats from that website? Or can you earn these cheats in-game? I see there is a menu for it.

No, but using cheats wont ruin any achievements it just unlocks the characters quicker. You can find/unlock them ingame if you dont want to use them.

To use one, go to Extras on the menu and then Enter Code.
