Purpose of collecting studs?
What purpose does it serve smashin' every last Lego block? It is ruining my game experience, slowing things down. Or is it just optional? (new to LEGO games)

They will serve as currency to unlock characters, generally you dont need to worry about them till later and if you want to get 100% then you should wait till you can unlock the bricks which give a bonus to collected studs.

So you're saying I should just play without bothering about them or what?

well its good to get 100 % first time around just to knock it out the way, to have that currency to buy new characters, and worry bout other things if u try to collect kits and stuff...just my opinion.. :)

It helps to have them, but you don't need to obsessively collect them through the levels. The studs only come to play when you want to buy characters or extras (bonuses for gameplay, like invinsibility etc.). Best plan is to collect studs to unlock the extras that give you more studs. (x2, x4 and so on) after that you'll get studs easily enough to buy everything you need :)

the best was I find to play Lego games is to start aggressively breaking everything to get the x2 brick early doors, once you unlock that then you can relax

What do you mean by 100%? Breaking EVERY SINGLE BLOCK? Man that's insane!

No, 100% completion, like most games with extensive collectibles. Find/do/unlock everything. To do that, you'll need studs. Lots of them. But you can't get 100% the first time through anyway as you'll need access to other characters in free play mode to do that. So don't worry about studs overly much until you hit free play.

What I usually do is play all the way through on story to unlock as many characters possible and hopefully gain enough to buy at least the first stud multiplier. And a confession; I cheat just a little - the stud multipliers are the one thing I always look up so I can get the x2 asap.

Ok. In the first mission here, I see a collectible in one of the early room, on top of a pile of indestructible Lego. You mean to say, stuff like this which I CANNOT get in my regular playthrough, I can get when I unlock new characters?

Yes, once you unlock free play by finishing a given level in story mode. That pile of lego is probably destructible by a character not playable in story mode, or Gandalf can reach it with magic, or something else.

So you can get 100% w/o getting EVERY stud? I got 100% on the first level I think (that's what it said on-screen).
himmatsj Apr 10, 2014 @ 1:27pm
But yeah, the second level. If I followed the story path, I might have finished it in 15 mins. Otherwise, you can explore Hobbiton, and take a boat out. Is this what you should do to 100% the game? And you recommend me leaving this exploration (away from the story that eats lots of time) for a second playthrough?

You'll need to get a certain amount of studs per level but it's easier to do it with multipliers which you unlock later, just play the game and explore at your own pace then when you finish the story seek out the red bricks and replay the level in free play to get to places you couldnt go before.

I'm just really confused. I don't want to explore every nook and cranny the first time if I still need to do that again to get all unlockables. For the main story, there is no real benefit of exploring, is there? It is more of a completionist thing, right?

Just play through the main game as you would normally the first time around. Once you've finished the story then you can go back an collect the actual "collectibles", studs are not considered part of the "collectible". Every time you finish a level it will unlock "free mode" for that level. You can then replay that level with any characters you've unlocked so far and go for the collectibles, assuming you have the characters you need to get them.

Studs are basically Lego money. You use them to purchase character & redbricks. The redbricks are cheats that you turn on/off from the pause menu. They typically offer cheats such as studs x2, x4, etc as well as invincibility etc.

Hope that helps.

How do I purchase characters and red bricks? I see no such option.

So basically there is a main game for action and narration, and an after game for puzzles and exploration?

What exactly are collectibles then?
