How to unlock weapons

I have beaten the entire game, and for some reason, every weapon (except for the ones I bought in the DLC and the mithril one I unlocked at the forge) is still locked. Apparently, no one else is having this problem, so I thought I'd ask here: How do I get those dang weapons?

There are two ways of getting weapons. One is through finding a schematic, either in a mission or in the open world, then forging that item out of mithril at the forge in Bree. The other involves finding them hidden in missions (they glow yellow), and picking them them. In both cases, you often have to break something to reveal them.

To use a weapon, hold down the key that you usually use to swap characters to bring up a menu. Between 4 and 5 o'clock are the items. Select that, then move to the item you want to equip, then select it. You should then see your character holding that weapon.

By missions, you mean the quests people in the overworld ask for you to do, right?

No, by missions, it means doing a level in story or free mode. Schematics are available there as well.

You'll get most schematics and treasure items when doing a mission in free mode. The characters available in story mode often lack the abilities to recover them.
