Cant switch in between characters

I love the Hobbit and my friend got the game fore me today. I haven't even been able to get through the first quest. I can use my character wheel but if in need to switch to thorin after using thrain it won't let me play the character. I would really apreciate it if somebody could help me

Instead of holding down the button to bring up the character wheel, tap it briefly. This is how you go between your two characters.
