How do you buy characters?

Seems like it should be obvious. I've got hundreds of thousands of studs and want to buy some characters. I'm in the Trollshaws now, about 10% of the way through the game, but I haven't yet found the place to buy characters. Also, I thought I read something about fast traveling. How does that work?

you will find the charecters wandering around the map (maybe only after the game ends) and you have to go to them and buy them (their symbol will appear on the map when you open it) for fast travel there will be owl statues on the map that you can fast travel to.
