Can I play this game by just playing the stock market?

I wanted to find an economic game and I've heard this one is very in depth, but the subject of car production doesn't entice me too much.

Well, you can buy shares in other companies and earn an income from them... but where are you going to get that investment cash if you're not making any money yourself? Also, detailed as it is, this isn't a stock market simulator. I think it would be incredibly boring trying to play it as such.

You can play just the stock market, and it's even an achievement. But as Goffik mentions, the game is centered around the automotive industry. Even all the stocks in the game are just AI car companies.

That being said, I'd still recommend giving the demo a spin. I often hear of folks not interested in cars, even a few anti-car people, enjoying the game despite the theme.

If you're dead set on a stock market game, I would recommend Wall Street Raider by Ronin Soft.

Yes gearcity is a car game, but it is also a detailed economic simulator. Large number of starting options allow you to set up the kind of game you want to play. (from sandbox to very challenging) I recommend it to any fans of economic / tycoon type games

^^ Definitely this. I don't have any special interest in the automotive industry myself, but I play GC because it's a deep, detailed business/economy sim. At the end of the day a product is a product... it's the systems around designing, producing and selling that product which makes the gameplay. :)
