The game wants to start by default in a 16 bit video mode but the Windows 8 desktop does not support 16-bit color anymore (at least it doesn't in my NVidia GT 240 video card) so you need to use the Reduced Color Mode compatibility option to get the game to successfully launch.

In Steam click Library. Find X-Tension in the list. Right click X-Tension and select Properties. Click the Local Files tab. Click Browse Game Files to find the folder with the X-Tension files in it.

Right click the file X-TENSION.EXE and click Properties. Click the compatibility tab. Under Settings click the check box for Reduced Color Mode. Select from the pulldown menu below that 16-bit (65535) Color. Click Apply then OK to close the settings. Now you can start the game and it should work.

I have issues with windows 8 and well xbtf - Xt and x2 - neither of them wants to start - when it comes to X tension it starts up and you see the logo - then it just crashes to the desktop. Ive tried using the compability mode on different os versions as well as the mentioned 16 mode - but nothing works for either one of the three games :/
Any ideas ?

Make sure you aren't using any compatibility mode except Reduced Color Mode 16-bit and make sure you don't have Run as Administrator checked in the compatibility options. Start X:BTF. Uncheck "Use Settings", check "In window". Click Start.

If that doesn't work I'd try to look for the latest video driver or your video card. Maybe your video driver is an older buggy one.

You can run the event viewer (mouse to lower left corner, right click, select Run, "eventvwr") and look in Windows Logs->Application for the crash report from where the game crashed. Maybe it would be helpful in figuring out why the game crashed.

It runs on win 8 and 8.1 without any compability settings. On first start you should disable config. Then set options you like with 32bit video modes.
