What do zombies attack?
Defense walls: will they automatically attack them, or will the zombies only attack walls if they detect a planter/livestock animal and the walls are getting in their way?

I ask this because I put a gate and a bunch of walls in front of the respawn point. A zombie only damaged a wall when I was inside the garage and the zombie couldn't reach me

They will attack walls if they need to get past them to get inside your compound, otherwise they just walk around them. For some reason, your compound attracts zombies en masse. Even if there is nothing there, you can not be there, you can have no crops, no animals, and they just beeline for your compound. Walls feels useless because if you leave and come back, the wall will just be destroyed so they can get in.

What difficulty do you play on? I'm on easy, and I only get around two zombies spawning at a time in regular intervals. I often leave the garage alone for one, two, even three normal nights. I come back to the garage with the gate in front of it untouched by zombies.

My first judgment night, however, was different. That's when I encountered a small horde of zombies regularly streaming in threes and fours. Even had a couple soldiers and big boys, ones that needed more hits to take down.

These zombies on judgment night went straight for the garage, unlike the previous 'normal' nights where the zombies just amble around. I closed the gate to the garage and stayed right in front of it, drawing aggro to myself so they don't attack the planters I set up inside. Subsequent nights went back to spawning two ambling zombies at a time.

Will save up more materials, experiment with wall setups to see what draws zombie aggro and what doesn't.

I'm playing on normal.

I have left the compound to gather mats and I have come back to everything smashed. All the walls were gone, the planters inside were broken, even the standing torches. The metal walls are like tissue paper and a single zombie can get through in 30 seconds. Sadly I send all my time getting mats to fix the walls, and that is not fun.
