Books Similar to The Last Door Series?
Im looking for exclusively books, not other games or anything. I know its heavilly influenced by Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. Not sure if I'll like Poe however I've already ordered a collection of all of Lovecrafts stories. Anyone know of any great books that give the same dark feel? Or an author that writes books? For a feel as to what kind of stories I like, usually ones that aren't hardcore horror or anything but something that leaves you constantly wondering, gives a derk feeling, and keeps you wanting to know more. Thanks to anyone who helps!

The Revolutions by Felix Gilman is 1800's with tons of occult implications. Goes a bit Jules Verne towards the end but the beginning and middle are somewhat last door-sian

Robert E Howard was a contemporary of Lovecraft and wrote many horror stories that are similar. Be aware, however, that there's often a lot of early 20th century attitudes to race all the way through them.

The best are M.R. James (gothic horror short stories) and Henry James (mostly one story: The Turn of the Screw). They are very cerebral and feel less outdated (through pop culture exposure) than Poe or Lovecraft.

M. R. James is great. Another is Walter de la Mare. In my experience old, short horror/ghost stories are usually pretty good and numerous. http://www.underworldtales.com/classic.htm seems to have a good list. Personally I like audiobooks that are compilations of them, like "Classic Tales of Ghosts and Vampires", etc. I'm not sure how many full novels of the period exist or if they're any good. An obvious good example is Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Turn of the Screw is excellent. The implications of what's going on is a surprisingly disturbing plot for that time period. China Meiville's books have an element of the grotesque and gothic. Perdido Street Station and Kraken are the closest that I've read.

Yep, China Mieville is quite interesting, derived from the weird fiction of Lovecraft although not quite that close to classical horror. It's New Wierd/Bizarro.

Would also recommend Shirley Jackson (We Have Always Lived in the Castle) if the OP is open to modern weird fiction. That\s probably the best thing I've read along with The Turn of the Screw.

According to Yogscast Kim when she let's played the game, the Woman in Black and the Mist in the Mirror by Susan Hill have much of the same atmosphere.

Stephen King wrote a great little short story called Crouch End that is an obvious homage to H.P Lovecraft.

This is a bit further afield (more sci fi than gothic) but I get this vibe from a lot of Philip K. ♥♥♥♥'s work, especially some of his early short stories. For a full-length book, his Martian Time-Slip is not quite so dark in the "occult" sense, but it is bizarre and unsettling, like a lot of his stuff.

*EDIT* oh for goodness sake, Steam is going to censor PKD's name? He's the Author of Martian Time-Slip and a ton of other stuff, I guess you'll have to google.
