Scarecrow help on modern pc?

I struggled for a good half hour getting through the pumpkin patch with the awkward at best "click combat" controls on a current pc. (Clicking directly on crows no longer works, you have to 'anticipate' them now...)

Now that I've gotten to the scarecrow boss with near full health (by save scumming,) I can't seem to get more than a few steps before dying. WTF?

Is this one of those cases where the game is now unplayable because my pc is too fast?

I managed to beat him a few days ago. He felt too fast (not like in 2003 when I first played the game).

Yeah, I remembered he was slow and you could stun him for a few seconds to get the pumpkins. Now he's running right up to me and stun-locking me at the starting area.

Ha Ha!

I played this when it was a new title, but now have been spoiled by modern controls, the faster (now instant) loading speeds, and not needing a specific video card to run it.
