Static in-game
so i decided to blow the dust off of this game in my library, and when i started it up, what i assume to be music comes up as static. the problem did not go away when i turned the music off.

i looked at all the codec fixes, and it still did not help... i even installed the superbox physical verion and that did not help...

any suggestions or is the game just that old that nothing can be helped.

Hi, I had this problem too. Googling a bit I found out that X3 uses the default Windows codec for their sounds, and if the one you have installed isn't the one X3 likes for its mp3s (windows default), crap gets broken.

I assume you have some codec collection installed on your PC (CCCP, K-Lite, etc), those are on the list of offenders that break the game. I had CCCP installed, so I thought that this problem probably applies to the first games too. And it does.

If you also use CCCP, the easiest solution is to uninstall CCCP, but if you actually use it, then it's not an option. Basically run your CCCP-Settings (on my PC it was at the start menu, but you can probably find it at C:\Program Files (x86)\Combined Community Codec Pack\CCCP-Settings.exe). Enter LAV Audio Settings. And at the Formats tab, untick "mp3", "mp2", and "wavpack".

That will make it run fine. It fixed the noise/static problem for me.

I haven't had this problem. But I just wanted to say @Sata Leroer: you're kind and considerate to take the time to respond in such a clear and helpful way.

I had an identical problem with Kamidori and the LAV Filters. Thanks for the solution!

Just adding my +1 to this fix. It's still a problem with the latest CCCP and/or X:BtF.

Thanks Sata!

Sorry to revive the thread, but I'm having the same issue. When I last played the game 2 years or so ago (on the same hardware), the game worked fine, but now I'm just getting very loud static instead of voices.

I don't have any codec packs installed, so maybe a program I installed since then has automatically installed some codec. Any ideas how I could find out which program or codec is responsible?

Edit: I found another thread which recommended looking through DxDiag to find the codec causing the issue, and for some reason, I did have the LAV filters installed, which were also mentioned in this thread. Simply disabling LAV for certain formats, as recommended above, didn't work, however, as it just resulted in all voices being heavily pitch-shifted.

In the end, I just uninstalled the LAV filters, which solved the issue.
