Fullscreen, but has a window border?
This was the first time I tried playing the game, and I don't know for sure if I just messed something up, but the game shows itself as a "fullscreen window" while parts of the main menu go past the borders.

Any idea how to delete/edit any setting files I might have messed up, since uninstalling the game hasn't reset anything.

Thanks in advance.

there's another thread in here somewhere that suggested using a 4:3 ratio screen resolution. i switched to 1600x1200 (from 1920x1200) and, voila, i can actually see the whole screen without part of the UI getting chopped off. i do have black bars around but not too much of a dealbreaker for me. i will have to try to GOG version to see how that is.

I tried doing something like that moments ago and ended up having to reset my computer since X or something froze and I couldn't alt tab out of it. I mean it acted like I could, I could alt-tab through my running programs, but the X window stayed upfront frozen, and my screen res stayed at the last res the game was set to.

For some reason when I install the GoG verson of this it works (no window)even if i run it from steam. If I uninstall the GoG verson its back to being windowed no matter what i do. That should help narrow down whats going on.

Same here, I bought the GOG version after I got sick of wasting my time to get any workarounds for the borders in the steam version. As long as the GOG version of X Gold is installed, also the Steam version works correctly without the disturbing 'window-frame'.

Really ? I guess they arent installed in the same location ?
So they mush share a file or two that overrides these configs. Are they the same patch version ?

I recently decided I wanted to finish X:BtF, so I've been messing around with resolutions and settings for a few days. Some observations:

1. X:BtF stores settings in the registry, in a way that a normal Windows 10 HP user account seems to not have the ability to update: you can change settings in-game, but they won't be saved properly unless you're running with Administrator privileges.

You can elevate privileges and run the .exe directly, but it's easier to just run the Steam client as Administrator when you want to play X:BtF. This allows you to launch X from the library, a shortcut, the tooltray menu, etc. and get the same behavior.

2. Somebody else suggested using the Nvidia Control Panel to delegate scaling to the GPU (check the "Display/Adjust desktop size and position/Override the scaling mode set by games and programs" option). This is absolutely essential if your graphics card supports it. My resolution and window vs. full-screen changes weren't making sense before I did this, e.g. I'd change the resolution but the window size wouldn't scale to match, etc.

3. Using a 4:3 resolution is pretty much mandatory, because of the way X:BtF is coded. I've found that a 1600x900 resolution, with the full-screen game option selected and the Nvidia option in 2) checked, produces the best slightly distorted but still playable full-screen display, with an unobtrusive (blank) title bar and a thin border on my 1920x1080 monitor, with no third-party utilities required.

Hope this is helpful.

btw guys. if you create gog account and link it with steam you'll get free gog version of it which works better on modern machines. For myself i used previously borderless gaming (it was before gog feature).

Thanks. Your suggestions were helpful. I used the Nvidia Control Panel to delegate scaling to the GPU, choose full screen, and checked the Override the scaling mode set by games and programs and that seemed to work.

Install the free version of Borderles Gaming from the internet and you don't need anything else or even any compatibility modes to get this game working as it should again in Win 10, directly through Steam. Just run the Borderless Gaming app first and add X to it, so it's in the sys tray, and then you can play X through Steam as normal.

There is a proven solution. Well, sort of.

GOG.com just released their version of "X - Beyond the Frontier" and "X-Tension" (http://www.gog.com/game/x_gold) with a wrapper which takes care of this. You start the wrapper, the wrapper starts the game, no visible borders on any resolution. Still no proper support for widescreen though. But finally, we got rid of these stupid frames :)

Silly me.
I forgot I have the GOG.com version of these games and here I am wasting time with Steam forgetting the guys at GOG.com actually spend time trying to make the old games they sell playable unlike Steam where they publish anything that publishers dump as is.

...and indeed. Installed the GOG.com version and it worked directly.

Is that still true, or did that offer expire? I know some games on the GOG connect scheme have a limited-time redemption period.

You don't lose anything for trying

Just link your accounts. Make sure your Steam profile is Public, at least temporarily and then go to https://www.gog.com/connect and hit the button

I was reading one of the reviews on this game on GOG and he recommended skipping this game in the series and playing X2 Threat instead. He calls the game painfully slow with a lot of grinding.

"If your interested in the X series, its probably best skipping to "X-2 The Theat" and just reading a plot summary of this one"

I own the Egosoft collection and was wondering whether with all its issues with Windows 10, maybe I should just skip this game in the series and follow this guy's advice and jump to X2 Threat. Do you guys agree with his assessment?
