I tried doing something like that moments ago and ended up having to reset my computer since X or something froze and I couldn't alt tab out of it. I mean it acted like I could, I could alt-tab through my running programs, but the X window stayed upfront frozen, and my screen res stayed at the last res the game was set to.
So they mush share a file or two that overrides these configs. Are they the same patch version ?
1. X:BtF stores settings in the registry, in a way that a normal Windows 10 HP user account seems to not have the ability to update: you can change settings in-game, but they won't be saved properly unless you're running with Administrator privileges.
You can elevate privileges and run the .exe directly, but it's easier to just run the Steam client as Administrator when you want to play X:BtF. This allows you to launch X from the library, a shortcut, the tooltray menu, etc. and get the same behavior.
2. Somebody else suggested using the Nvidia Control Panel to delegate scaling to the GPU (check the "Display/Adjust desktop size and position/Override the scaling mode set by games and programs" option). This is absolutely essential if your graphics card supports it. My resolution and window vs. full-screen changes weren't making sense before I did this, e.g. I'd change the resolution but the window size wouldn't scale to match, etc.
3. Using a 4:3 resolution is pretty much mandatory, because of the way X:BtF is coded. I've found that a 1600x900 resolution, with the full-screen game option selected and the Nvidia option in 2) checked, produces the best slightly distorted but still playable full-screen display, with an unobtrusive (blank) title bar and a thin border on my 1920x1080 monitor, with no third-party utilities required.
Hope this is helpful.
Thanks. Your suggestions were helpful. I used the Nvidia Control Panel to delegate scaling to the GPU, choose full screen, and checked the Override the scaling mode set by games and programs and that seemed to work.
Silly me.
I forgot I have the GOG.com version of these games and here I am wasting time with Steam forgetting the guys at GOG.com actually spend time trying to make the old games they sell playable unlike Steam where they publish anything that publishers dump as is.
...and indeed. Installed the GOG.com version and it worked directly.
Is that still true, or did that offer expire? I know some games on the GOG connect scheme have a limited-time redemption period.
You don't lose anything for trying
Just link your accounts. Make sure your Steam profile is Public, at least temporarily and then go to https://www.gog.com/connect and hit the button
"If your interested in the X series, its probably best skipping to "X-2 The Theat" and just reading a plot summary of this one"
I own the Egosoft collection and was wondering whether with all its issues with Windows 10, maybe I should just skip this game in the series and follow this guy's advice and jump to X2 Threat. Do you guys agree with his assessment?
