The first title of the Freddi Fish series, we meet the titular main characters as they go about solving their mysteries! We need to help out the granny character get her Kelp Seeds back before everyone starves. The game features multiple objectives that are randomized for each playthrough.

Was it a good title though? No, not really. I found that compared to Putt-Putt and Pajama Sam, Freddi Fish and Luther were sort of 'bland'. We had the usual distractions and such but it really felt like those were just put there cause 'hey, this will distract kids', as opposed to putting them there as something fun to entertain them.

It also started a rather bad trend with regards to interactions with dogs - I'm not sure it was common knowledge that you shouldn't give bones to dogs but it is something that would need to be explained away to a kid playing it.

Overall I wasn't impressed. That said though, this title didn't have a Quit button for a kid to click so at least they were a captive audience!

The first game in the series of a beloved childhood game which for me was the third game isn't appealing as it should be.
There's only one ending which makes the game have no replay value compared to the latter games(3,4 and 5) in the series.
The plot is very dire compared to the other games' plot. For a kids' game that's aimed at a younger audience of small children, it's pretty surprising that they got away with saying people will die in this game. Doesn't really work with the graphical mismatching of the characters' design with the dark backgrounds.

It doesn't allow you to save your game which for a game aimed at a young audience is inexcusable. If they were willing to port the game to steam then they could have at least upgrade the game to have a save state or one measly save file.

If someone wanted to buy this game for their young child then I would gently suggest that they get the third game instead.

As of 3/29/24 I've been informed that the game allows you to save using s and l keys which I verified for myself in game. Apparently, you need to read the manual to know this which is an issue in older games. They expect you to read the manual to figure out how to do anything in the game. It's a game design choice that I don't miss in modern day games.

You can't stop or save the game. You have to start completely over every time. :(

Apart from Freddi Fish 5: The Case of the Creature of Coral Cove this is the only game every player shouldn't buy. Although to be fair it was indeed a classic back when first released. Now it honestly needs to be remastered with far more choices to do, and faster gameplay; before I can ever recommend every player should play.

I bought a pack of the Humongous Entertainment titles because they were nostalgic for me and because I have 20+ Nephews and Nieces ages 1-15 that visit semi regularly and like to play on my computer. I thought they might really enjoy these games like I had when I was a kid however they have tended to want to play the newer types of games that have nicer graphics and controls over these old games that are clunky by today's standards. because these games haven't managed to attract an audience of their intended demographic (my nephews and nieces) which I was hoping for I can't in good conscious recommend the game when they have no desire to play them

Well, here we go with another Steam sale and another sh**-load of games purchased that I'll spend forever trying to beat and turn a regular review, for no other reason than my own personal satisfaction.

So, you know, I'm living the dream.

I decided to pick up Freddi Fish this sale, since I had finally gotten around to beating Pajama Sam and Spy Fox, and I already played the pretty stale experience titled "Putt Putt Joins the Parade". I mean, what the hell? Let's just play all the Humongous games!

Freddi Fish has you playing as the titular character, who is a young aspiring fish detective out to help people with their various problems. In this first entry, all the fish in the ocean are literally DYING. I'd say those are some pretty low stakes to set for your first game.

Your grandma had all the fish's supply of kelp (a bit foolish, if you ask me), and it was unfortunately stolen by sharks who would leave clues behind in bottles out in the open for anyone to find. So, the game has you both trying to help fix whatever random problems a fish might have gotten into (trapped in a cage, living in a bright shell, or... using a mandolin as a crutch), as well as tracking down the bottles throughout the ocean floor. It's a nice combination between following clues and solving simple puzzles, that gives the game better flow than something like Putt Putt.

What I don't like, however, is the process you have to go through in order to get said bottles. This is still one of the older Humongous games where you can't skip the transition animation between screens, and the puzzles are so simple that the game gets really... really... really dull after a while. It's not unbearable, but it doesn't help the game for being fun, or at least memorable.

The game also seems to have a bit of a lazy HUD, where Freddi and Luther will actually swim in front of their inventory list on certain screens, as if it's a part of the background. And the aesthetic has me... mixed, at best. I love the backgrounds. The hand-painted screens look wonderful, but all the cartoony, bright fish that swim in it don't fit. Like, at all.

It's a similar complaint I had with 2015's refuse-worthy children's film "The Good Dinosaur". They both have wonderful backgrounds, but the characters that inhabit them are a big contrast from it. I think the backgrounds in this game would be better for a point-and-click horror game for a diver slowly losing oxygen than needs to find his lost submarine. A lot of the backgrounds are dark, intimidating, or ominous in some ways that gave me more of an isolated and suffocating feeling than the feeling of playing a simple kids adventure.

Of course, the voice acting is pretty "meh". Freddi and Luther are fine, but with the rest of the characters, it's pretty hit-and-miss. Some memorably terrible voices would be Fiddler Crab, the dumb shark, and the hermit crab. They just sound too overly-cartoonish or just flat-out bad to listen to.

And the game's story is pretty weak. You get some kelp to save all the fish in the sea, but the fact that no one cares about the potential starvation, or that the only political impact is just the king being mildly concerned about their ENTIRE FOOD SUPPLY GONE MISSING, seems a little odd to me. I mean, if America lost all of it's supply on food, would the President start a press conference, and open with, "Well, citizens of America, it seems we have lost all of our food supplies. Don't worry about it, though! There's these two kids that told me they'd find it. So... just go about your own business."

And some of the fish are inanely stupid, getting stuck in incredibly simple problems. Seriously, Fiddler Crab. How the f*** did you get stuck in that f***ing cage. It's not a crab trap. That is a simple locking cage. Did you accidentally lock yourself in there? In your own cage? And Luther is such a hindrance as a sidekick, it really feels like Freddi is the one going around and fixing everyone's incredibly simple problems, instead of them just going out and actually finding the solutions themselves, if they could just move their g****** legs.

Yes, this is a children's game. I know people like to the throw out the "But it's for kids!" argument whenever you call something from children's entertainment sh***y, but I pull no punches and I use no excuses for my criticism. If I didn't like something in a game, I didn't f***ing like it. It doesn't matter if it's "just a kid's game" or "just an action game", and I need to get over myself. It's that mentality that lets horrible entertaiment like Transformers run rampant in the film industry.

Slight rant aside, Freddi Fish is an honestly bad game. It's story was certainly lacking, especially with the tacked-on moral at the end, it's artstyle clashes, and it's puzzles are far too simple (even for its intended audience). It just felt very devoid of anything unique as a kid's edutainment game. I won't come back and play this game anytime soon. I'm giving Freddi Fish and The Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds, a 3/10.
