Broken golden sword?

I my first game of HQ I broke the golden sword after already finishing the hidden chest quest.
Despite no longer needing the golden sword I try to get it repaired for the missing few points - but the smith does not want to...?
"It seems Volund is not interested in the broken sword."

So am I simply clicking the smith somehow wrong or do I have to have the sword broken and repaired before finding and returing the chest?

That depends. Did you make Volund angry with you? Such as by giving one particular item to Hervor while he's nearby?

Yes, I did that. However he still will sell items to me or vouch for me just like before, so I did not notice any obvious scorn.
So for the maximum points I have to get the golden sword repaired before doing that other action?

Yes, or do that "other action" without Volund present.
