As for pickpocketing the harp, I... don't actually know.
I will say I got the points for pickpocketing the Eitur, and I've beaten the game as a max score Rogue by pickpocketing the figurine before, so I'm guessing the points are all there.
Yeah, that's what I thought the case might be. I've gotten the auto-game over from breaking into the smithy before, which I assume is there to prevent sequence breaking by stealing the Eye in Chapter 1 or 2, and I don't seem to be able to palm it off the table while the shop is open; usually an unsuccessful attempt at stealing gets you a message like "you try, but aren't inconspicuous enough." Trying to pick up the Ice Pick while in stealth mode just gives Volund's standard "Come talk to me if you want to buy anything," message.
I guess that means I gotta grind Thievery until I can pickpocket him... her... them and see if the Harp comes up before I empty the list.
Maybe it's a bug to do with trying to do it while he's drinking in the tavern? Or trying to do it while the proverbial sword of Damocles (yes, wrong mythology) is hanging over the village in the form of Thrivaldi's planned assault? Or maybe I need to have resolved the Gem Cavern event, even if I'm pickpocketing the reward? I'll have to do some experimenting.
One last random question: can you get your scarf back (or get a new one without spoiling Loki's Trickster by killing a random Svartalf encounter) after you use it when breaking and entering Eitri's house? (Again Rogue = unreasoning greed)
OK, so the points list I linked is just outright wrong about that. Good to know.
Unfortunately I do believe that the scarf is lost forever for you at that point.
It would've been neat if you could've had a rope and grappling hook that you could've used to fish the scarf back up, but no such tool exists for the Rogue-Heroine.
Pickpocketing the Figurine from Regin before you give him the Chest doesn't interfere with getting points for the latter, which would be consistent with Space Wizard Zach's experience.
So far, things* you can't get except by either buying them or as combat spoils are: caltrops (has anyone ever used caltrops?), the Sand in Eye maneuver, and an ice pick. (Dis)honorable mention to the Magic Harp, since you don't pay cash for it, but you do have to trade honestly for it (even if you just pickpocket back whatever you traded away for it).
(Not listing stuff like the Dragonscale Armor because, even though you give up the one and only Dragon Scale you can get without combat, in fiction, you technically get it back, just reshaped into wearable armor.)
*The list only includes stuff for vanilla Rogues, so I'm leaving off the heavy weapons, spell scrolls other than Shield, and the like.
EDIT:
I forgot to include Liff's amulet of protection (tentatively) it cannot be pickpocketed, but I've yet to test if it can be burgled.
Also, you need the ice pick to get the red gem; if you haven't gotten it already, it disappears when the Holt thaws (washed downstream and out of Jarnvidr, presumably).
So, I guess if we look at things that require either cash or winning combat, we thus far have:
*Caltrops (buy from Kraka, win from Duergar)
*Ice Pick (buy from Volund, win from Draug)
*Liff's Amulet (buy from Liff)
*Sand in Eye Maneuver (buy from Kraka)
Of these, only the Ice Pick appears to be required for a Rogue to get a full score.
Everything else, you can get as many, if not more, than you will need by a combination of burglary, pickpocketing, and using the right solutions to various puzzles.
Compared to the Sorceress where you're probably going to be staring at an empty wallet more often than not.
Oh definitely. The only times I've ever wanted for money past day 3 or so is as a Sorceress going for a pacifist run (or as close as she gets).
Avoiding paying for anything (while still being Loki's Trickster compliant) was a self-imposed challenge. But, much like a pacifist Sorceress, you have to break your rule at least once if you want a 500 score. Although unlike the Pacifist Sorceress, the Cheapskate Rogue can still beat the game, just with a less than perfect score.
