To tate, or not to tate? That is the question.
Was this game initially(not the Steam version) developed for a vertical 4:3 display? Akin to many "old-school" Japanesse arcade shooters? Or was it designed for a standard horizontal computer monitor, given its indie nature.

The reason I ask is because while playing in vertical(tate) on my 16:9 HDTV the left and right boarders of the playfield scroll side to side to reveal hidden portions of said playfield. This leads me to believe that either...

A) The game was originally designed for horizontal(yoko) 4:3 displays, and tate was only implimented as a noveltiy.

Or...

B) I've not yet found the right launch settings to display in true tate.

Will playing in normal, horizontal, 4:3, display the entire playfield without the scrolling effect? If so, which combination of launch settings should I use?

I loved RefleX, and this seems almost as good from what I've played. I just want to enjoy it in its purest form, as the orginal creators intented.

Is tate for this game the way to go? Or is the tate option merely included to pay homage to its arcade ancestors?

Any suggestions/insights would be much apprecated.

Thanks!

Tate mode was just a novelty added in for the Kickstarter release. I seriously doubt there would be vertical display monitors readily available to the average person in 1999's Japan, so it wouldn't make sense to design your game around such a thing.

"Vertical display monitors" are just a monitor turned sideways. Any old TV or monitor will do, even in 1999. I started doing that around 1995 for PS1 Raiden, and throughout the late 90s I found enough games that support it that one of my TVs spent more time on its side than with normal orientation. Arcades used vertically mounted displays even back in the 70s.

That said, doujin games rarely support tate. It's not something I generally hold against games designed for home play (as opposed to a game originally designed around arcades). Cool when we get it though.

This is all true. I've gone off the deep end as far as Tate shooters are concerned. I located a rotational mount for my 40" LED as well as a custom made upscaler with scan-lines to fully appreciate my collection of console shooter ports. Any fan of old school shooters owes it to themselves to witness their favortie games in tate. Its more than just a visual upgrade, it can also improve gameplay by providing more detail and a full playfield as oringinally intended.

@HattoriHanz0128

Thanks for the details on the background of this game. I had no idea it was a Kickstarter.
After a few experiments with my settings it seems the screen still scrolls even when playing in normal orientation and aspect ratio. So long as I know that thats how the game was originally designed I'm happy.

However, I just bought Alltynex Second... may not be playing this one for awhile.

After trying out tate mode in Kamui, it's definitely busted when playing fullscreen. With tate enabled, try comparing windowed and fullscreen; the fullscreen mode is super squished.

Did you disable filtering just in case? Also, did you try using the Zoom option? I've obtained different outcomes on a 16:9 TV/Monitor. Results are strikingly different on a TATE'd 4:3 screen. (I use an old 17" LCD display for that.)

The game was not a Kickstarter, the original release is from 1999, the KS was to bring all three game of the series plus the extensive book that contains bunch of development info and sheds some light on the doujin scene, when information was scarce due to the lack of Internet. Siter Skain is one of the most historical doujin circles and has been making stuff since the pre-Windows era (before Windows 98/XP took presence in Japan you would see diverse types of PCs like the FM Towns or the PC-98, the original ALLTYNEX was made for FM Towns).

I'll try TATE mode tonight at different settings and see if I can find an ideal setting to tinker with.
