Chapter 5 help
I did something pretty silly, and now I think I'm stuck... I had a bunch of the +2 task support cards for the school room earlier, but at the time, I didn't have any of the didactic programs card to actually level up my characters, so I used all the task support cards on reading one of the tablets/books early in chapter 5 (I don't remember what the name of it was, but I probably did that 5 or 6 times and used up all the task support cards lol).

So now, I only have one level 3 character, and therefore don't have the stats to beat the bell fiends, other than the one in the courtyard. I've rung the beckoning bell a bunch and got a bunch of moonlight shards, but I can't figure out what to do now... I think I either need another Scrubbing Salt, so I can "Find Amy's book" in the well house, or I need two +2 task support cards for the school room to level up another character (probably Astor) and beat more bell fiends (in the machine room and well house). Except, I can't figure out how to make either of those two things happen :( Feel like I've tried everything, but hopefully I'm just missing something obvious, and sadly I haven't really been taking notes on how to get what (though I certainly am now, lol). Any suggestions?

Keep summoning bell fiends.

Hey there, hmm I'll have to check but you might have hit a block because you didn't level up your characters when you got the insight to do so.
And then I guess you used those double insight cards to read the book dropped by the ghost of lord gideon?
Hm yeah, I don't think I expected people to do that. I think even if you do manage to progress you will be stuck a bit later on.

I'll try and add something to the next patch to make it harder to get into this position but for now I can give you some tips to help you continue if you want
if you find your save file SaveData.txt

found in C:\Users\tom\AppData\LocalLow\Nullpointer Exception Ltd\TheHorrorAtHighrook
Swop \tom\ for your own username of course 🙂

and look for the characters cards,,CharA, CharB, CharC, CharD. The bit you want looks like this (you might need to do a ctrl-f to find them)

"m_ActiveCards": [
{
"m_DefName": "CharB",
"m_E_CardType": 4,
"m_CardLevel": 3,

You can then change the "m_CardLevel": 2, to "m_CardLevel": 3,
make sure to keep all the bits of punctuation (literally just change the number for each Char)
save teh file and reopen the game.. hopefully that will boost your characters to the correct level. IF this seems to tricky you can pop onto the game discord and ping me there and I can do it for you

Thanks for the report though, Its not strictly a bug, but id rather people done end up in the same situation, will have to try think of a way to avoid it somehow, or at least hint that you should be levelling your characters when you can.

Thanks so much! Those changes worked :) Just to clarify, I definitely would have leveled up characters if I had any of the didactic program cards, but I didn't, so I couldn't level them up. Maybe there was a way to get those easily at the time that I forgot, but yeah, I did the only thing I thought I could at the time (though using those +2 task cards when I only needed a +1 bonus to read Gideon's book did definitely feel wrong at the time, it was just the only use I could see). Anyway, hope my stupidity is a little helpful at least haha, thanks again!

yeah those didactic cards are just normal results form any archives search, but its easy to forget they come from there once you havent needed them for a while
I think I have the opposite problem. I used all 8 +2 cards from the zombie to level up my characters. So now I have 4x lvl3 characters, but also 4 focus 7 cards I can't progress on because they need a +2 card. Chapter 5. I guess I should have only leveled 2 characters up.
There is still hope that the dream trinket will give me something with +2 but it doesn't seem like it.

I see my problem now.
Since the first leveling teached me that the gray cards from the incursions were for leveling up, I automaticly assumed that the gray cards from the zombie had the same purpose, so I just used them them the same way, 2 for each character. I never realised that I actually only needed 3 gray point for leveling and I gave them 4. I should have used only 1 zombie reward + the gift card for each leveling. Then I would have had 4 rewards left.

This is the only part of the game where a mistake is KO. Usually you can just grind for more.
What a shame, I'm not starting over.

Hi There.. No you are correct, the insight cards are always for levelling characters up. You didn't do anything wrong. You just hadn't found the (+2) support cards you were after yet in ch5 (I'm assuming its something you need to use in the study?) Hopefully you still have the saved game in a slot you can go back to, if so, keep ringing the beckoning bell, that might help you - that is of course if I'm right in understanding your current position in the game

But it was only producing echoes? I made 2 echoes with it before I stopped ringing it.

Actually, I only just now edited some +1 cards to +2 so I could get past those 4 items and then edited them back. This made me reach chapter 6, but I see now that the watchers are lvl7, so again I am missing something giving me +2 and I don't know what it is.
And I can't go back because of the enforced iron man save slot. Annoying.

The bell would have given you a new demon to face (after the 2 echoes and the family). And that demon drops a +2..
Also don't worry now you are in ch6, there is an item in the chapter that allows you to hit +7..
