Soft-locked getting the "Bronze Gates" achievement

To describe what happened in detail I started the main game for a third time in the session after dying twice in the first stage (because I forgor that the guy on the balcony revives you if you don't make it to the third round) and when I got to the third stage and promptly swiss cheesed myself the screen just remained black but not frozen. It was very much responsive because the game was still running at 60 fps and when I pressed ESC it would show the prompt to press it again to quit the game. (Except after alt-tabbing a bit it then said to press "Joypad Button 6").
