Glitch: Wooden corridor door with 4 slide bolts: magnifying glass only / no return option

Game is stuck ...cant get back to the main game as no return option. The game files validate on steam. Any ideas how to move it on? Was on compatability for XP sp1 tried change to Vista SP1 no change. Computer in Windows 7 Home Edition 64 bit Acer Aspire M3800. Also tried windowed mode but just same.

Correction I was on compartability mode for XP sp3 and played OK up to the glitch. I have also tried mode for XP sp2. I have game music, I can move the cursor around. I can select the bottom left book: Resume/Options/Menu. Akll these options work. Significant is that the Hint shield does not function. The collected objects are currently four keys and I note that one of the keys is a full key but above it is a mirror image of half a key: the lower half of the key image as in a lenghwise cut.

6+ years later same glitch but figured I'd post solution on the off chance someone else happens by. You have to drop the keys right on the bolts just to the right of where the magnifying glass changes over to regular pointer. Doesn't seem to matter which key goes to which bolt.
