What you were supposed to do was kill the vampire you fight at the top of the east tower, then to go and put a stake through the sleeping vampires chest to get the key for the lever. You needed to go back to the arena where you fought the vampire to switch the lever to lower aunt sophie and use the same key to open the gate back down the east tower, problem is, you cannot activate the gate from the ascending side. This is where bad game design really shows cause when you stab the sleeping vampire the green light which guides you through the game is on a trap door which you assume to go down, when you should go back to save aunt sophie.
What you can do,
there should be a room in the east wing with a door on the ceiling, this is the only way to access the top of the east tower as you hadn't gone back to open the gate and lower the lever.
You'll have to time the jump as the ceiling door is closing so the door scoops you into the room above. alternativly you could let her die but that could take hours, the reward to saving aunt sophie is the key to busters cage (the dog) but i might be wrong about that.
Hope that helps. This game bloody rocks!
And now I killed the end boss. Easy game.
