How do you scan containers?

How do you scan containers with a controller or keyobard in the bonus objectives? Do you just target them? That doesn't seem to work.

I try to make your buddy fly past them, but what you need to do is get within 500m of a container. It doesn't matter if you target it or not.

I was going to ask the same question. Loving this game so far. Is the only way to buy upgrades via the crowns that you earn for completing bonuses?
