No Menu UI showing when playing this in VR.
Hi, I recently purchased this game and tried first to play it on my ultrawide screen monitor. No problems, nice looking game. Then I tried it with my VR headset, start the game from Steam Dashboard in VR mode and after loading I get the random battle view that run normally behind the menu, this time in 3D VR ofcourse, looks great. Mentions to sit up straight and use the right paddle click to centre view, works fine (using PC Xbox controller via USB).

However, I soon noticed that I could not see the menu, (normally the menu shows layered on top of the battle that goes on in the background when running in normal monitor mode). Even when I watch the VR output on my main monitor it won't show the menu overlay. The console (pressing `) will however show up but only on the monitor output not within my VR headset (what does show in VR is the UI or part of it, like the little lines and circles around all of the ships). When I press the A button (which would normally would start the game) the game does carry on, eventually I get to see the galaxy map, I can move the cursor using the controller but again, there is no menu overlay, so I cannot see what I am choosing to do.

So at this point in time, in VR this game is unplayable to me (main reason for purchasing it), I have checked the forums and faq, but I could not see my problem listed. (I did read an old post from last year about menu overlay not showing in VR but apparently that only happened in the old build and with HOTAS attached to the PC). I would appreciate some help sorting this out and getting it to work properly in VR. If there is already a solution to this problem/or very similar to this, please point me in the right direction, otherwise this will need to be looked into. Thanks in advance.

Hi!

Thanks for the reformat. To better help, I have some questions:
  • What headset are you using?
  • Did you run the room setup app in SteamVR? UI overlay problems during the HMD reset are sometimes due to a mixup there (the game tells the API to use its saved zero-position).
  • When you use the Steam VR overlay/dashboard where is it usually positioned in relation to your desk/chair?

The menu overlay probably will not show up on the main screen (it is handled on the headset by Steam). I see SteamVR just updated today but I am not able to reproduce this problem with the new version just yet.

Headset: Pimax 4K
Room Setup: I have run room setup, just ran it again after the SteamVR update.
The Steam Dashboard shows up infront of me whenever i press the X on the Xbox controller, it is easily viewable and readable (no idea if it suppose to be closer or further away but I can read is cleary infront of me but I do need to move my head to view it all). AFAIK the dashboard is in its usual position.

I just tried HotDS again, after the steam update and redoing room setup. I run it via dashboard while wearing my VR headset, loading screen comes up and again all I get to see is a view point of the rotating camera that goes from ship to ship. I do not see any menu neither does the 'welcome do you have a bug' window message that comes up first when running it on normal monitor mode. I can however see the small amount of floating text descibring sitting upright and how to recentre the view point etc, which disappears after @8 secounds.

Hi,

The text that you DO see is something I handle myself, but the main menu is handled by SteamVR which is why I asked about the dashboard.

Can you post the output_log.txt to this thread as described here? http://steamcommunity.com/app/283160/discussions/0/305510202679777602/#c133258092252958627

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce this problem on my headsets, and have never heard of a Pimax 4k HMD. The debug log might help, but if it doesn't I will probably recommend getting a refund.

Thanks.

It looks like everything is successfully booting up. Can you boot the game up in 2D, go to the console with '~' and enter "camera.rendermode 1" without the double-quotes?

This is kind of a long shot, but it will tell the game to enter VR mode like it does in the bootup, but now you will have everything else in the game already running. Clicking the right-stick to re-center will work once it is in VR mode, so do that too.

Soya Apr 11, 2017 @ 3:36pm
OK, ran the game in 2d Mode while having the VR headset idle and SteamVR running in the background. Message comes up saying you 'HotDS runs VR natively but you have chosen desktop' ok to continue. Menu comes up with background battleview, all is well on the main monitor. Opening console enter camera.rendermode 1, immediately zooms in tighter on the viewed ship and menu disappears, watching it from the VR headset again show the battle in perfect view but no menu. Switching to rendermode 0 brings back the menu on the monitor but of course loses the view on my VR headset.

Not sure if this is relevant or will help you but when I switch between camera.rendermode 1 and 0 while viewing it through the VR, I can very brieflly (about half a second) see the main menu but then it disappears almost immediatly and I see the battle without the menu via VR.
Marauder Interactive  [developer] Apr 11, 2017 @ 4:02pm
Ok. There is another command that might help. It will turn off antialiasing on the UI/SteamVR overlay rendertexture which may be what is causing it to act weird.

Try this command when the game is in VR mode:
steamvr.antialiasoverlays 0
Soya Apr 11, 2017 @ 4:34pm
No luck still the same. I did also ran the display mirror option when you click on the SteamVR headset icon. When I run the game in VR, the menu text still won't shop up on either the VR headset or the monitor display that show a single window which mirrors your current display view but the other display mirror (from steamvr which show two views like two eyes) does show the menu options in them. Again, not sure if that info is of any use. I got to get some sleep now, I very much appreciate the help and will check tomorrow to see if you found a solution to this. Thanks.
Marauder Interactive  [developer] Apr 12, 2017 @ 7:27am
Hi,

I did a little bit more research about your headset and looked at the code. Valve just rolled back SteamVR to a previous version for some Oculus compatibility issues. Maybe this rollback will also help you since the Pimax4k masquerades as a Rift:

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/64tjke/steamvr_114_update_its_causing_all_steamvr_games/

But other than that, I don't have any good way to help you with your headset. If you had been anywhere close to the refund period when you first posted I would have recommended that.

As far as the code, there is so little documentation about the Pimax4k out there that I don't even know where to begin changing VR settings or code for compatibility. It would be stabbing in the dark.

I will keep looking, but there are no plans to update the game any time soon, especially without solid fixes for something like this.
Soya Apr 12, 2017 @ 11:18am
I do very much appreciate your prompt help & support on this matter. I know VR is still a very much undiscovered area for many developers and creators and should hopefully get much better in the future for all types of VR headsets.

I doubt the rollback would fix the problem as I had this problem before the recent SteamVR update but I shall try again later just in case. As for refund, I think I will keep this game for two reasons 1) It looks gorgoous in VR and I like the gameplay so far, even in normal monitor mode (but VR is truly incredible with this headset, full 4k) 2) you offered a possible temporary solution to playing it in VR without menus showing, I can use the command camera.rendermode to switch between monitor and VR, as the only time I need to see the menus is when changing settings or at the start of the game (plus I could also use SteamVR mirror option which oddly enough does show the menus). It is just slighly inconvenient to take the headset off in between scenerios/battles to check for menu options and upgrades.

I certainly can understand you may never be able to solve this but hopefully with future updates from both SteamVR and all other non Oculus/Vive headset becoming more user/developer friendly, perhaps this can and will get solved.

Again thanks and also thanks for a great looking and playing VR space game. Hope to see more in the future.

Regards.
