Hm. Rather than a monetary reward, how about they reward us with lore bits? Postcards and videos showing their gratitude, or details and weaknesses of their former captors as a mote of revenge?
The player shouldn't be motivated by money to save lives (unless they are explicitly contracted to do so). If we save them for the purposes of roleplaying, maybe our reward should be geared towards that roleplaying in the form of lore.
Hunter Killers punish the player for looting... in a looter extraction game.
