The Forever Winter

The Forever Winter

To those that play this. (recommend?)
Reading the steam reviews I'm getting mix views some are just giving out a full negative because of these "tunnels" others complaining about bugs.

To be honest I need actual people who spend more than 10 hours in this. What makes you keep coming back. How is the combat.

Are we able to run into braindead enemies making each round boring?

Will I feel like I'm never safe?

Is it similar to ARC where PVE can be seem more fun than just a regular pvp( not care there aren't other players to kill)

In short game feels intense and engaging enough to keep your attention at it. Atmosphere and general feeling in game works pretty well. I think the need for resources to upgrade base as solo player is too long grind, which can be fixed with mods (although it was a bit of struggle to make it work). At least so far game hooks you with feeling of how your life is fragile, easily lost. There's intruiging feeling of melancholy fighting for your existence in dystopian environment.

There's list of things I would like to see fixed, but as it is in EA that's to be expected. AI especially for human enemies is way too generic. Your hired companions could be a lot better as well. It's far from perfect, but good enough, if expectations are not set too high. And of course, if this type of game is what you're looking for.
Combat is fun but occasionally ruined by stun lock on player.
The stun lock, when it kicks, in always leads to your death. By the time you recover you are hit by the next lot of stun locking shots/shot.

This means certain enemies can only be engaged in certain ways OR some you simply can't fight at this time. at least as far as I have got with the weapons I have

for example I just got stun locked by a sniper. understandable. but the sniper then finished me off before stun lock ran out. Meaning there's was nothing I could do. Feels bad.

Basically combat feels great til it feels bad due to things like that.

Add in you being unable to cross small rocks, get stuck on terrain and unable to climb stuff that looks like it can be climbed thats right next to stuff you CAN climb with no discernible difference... yeah games stupidly buggy.

Oh almost forgot I'm playing with a mod that removes the stamina. Stamina doesn't make the game any harder. it just adds tedium by slowing everything down. When you have to run from tunnels across maps to tunnels across maps etc etc to get to where you actually wanna play/do a mission having to wait for stamina to fill back up was far too painful for me to put up with.

Anyway, the ideas good. but execution needs LOT of work. art is amazing though.
I keep playing it, casually now, because I hope it will improve and I think there is something in the initial concept.

I would not recommend at this time because I do not believe the devs have the mentality to really get it there. I have a pretty negative over all opinion.

Enemies are braindead, most of the 'difficulty' comes from janky platforming they added, kinda rushed tbh because the jumping mechanics like to cut out midjump. Long stretches of boring padding. Grinding isn't 'difficult, its padding but they went a bit overboard. Some enemies are cheap and will stun lock for an unreasonable amount of time just for being aggro'd, others will go back to patrol after a short skirmish or even just stare at the wall. I often have them just come around a corner in a neat line for me.

The devs don't really think things through fully and frequently they address any critizims by heavy handedly adding more of whatever was complained about before finally backing off. Like a bunch of immature hotheads. They want their game to be 'really hard' so they just keep brute forcing it in the cheapest of ways. it's so incredibly stupid. -_-

I hope I'm either wrong about it or they learn to get out of their own way, there could be a good game here but mixed to neg rn is pretty accurate imo. It's also overpriced, no character customization at all, but pay $$$ for cheap skins if you get bored of raw looking ones. The 'exclusiveness' was intentional.

I want to point out also just how incredibly easy it is to burn out ones own dev team. The stupid decisions and back tracking are a sure fire way for them to do that. So yeah, I don't think this one is going to 'make it'.

I'm waiting for AR to go on sale. Will probably just buy it once I have the real time to focus one it. It's got everything this one was trying to go for and it's a lot more fleshed out. I'm not so hung up on the 'ultra grim dark' to really motivate me to stick with this one over any other game.

Damn. You are so right. This coming from a fan of the game.
Nah, it's no where near ready.

I'm not a fan. A very strong critic. I do believe it could be a good game, the bones are there. I would prefer to be wrong and see this game be the best thing ever.... but I've been alive and a gamer long enough to know that is not how it's going to work out.
The game is very fun and enjoyable, especially when played with friends or random players.

I have spent around 400 hours in the game and have been playing since its release.

I stopped playing for several months because the early versions were in a very poor state, with many frustrating deaths caused by bugs, poor AI, and issues such as getting stuck etc..

However, over the past months, the developers have done a great job and in its current state the game is very playable and truly enjoyable !

Many negative reviews come from players who do not take the time to learn the game properly and explore its mechanics, choosing instead to play in a repetitive or unengaging way and then complain about the experience.

A great game once fully explored, with strong potential for future development.

This, and they took venture capital money from a company owned by blackrock and the rothschilds so..........
"What makes you keep coming back. How is the combat."
I keep coming back because I enjoy the gameplay and, the art direction is consistently awe inspiring. The game strongly captures the tone and atmosphere of the desperation to survive in the midst of an apocalyptic war. It also captures the moments of almost serene beauty as you traverse in an uneasy calm through various megastructures.

Not only that but the art direction is hitting on an aesthetic that speaks to me. The best way I could describe it is a sort of grounded sci-fi, with stylistic realism. It feels in way very similar to the movies directed by Mamoru Oshii. All of the mechanical units feel weighty, intimidating, and strong. The infantry feel lively relying on strength in numbers to take on harder foes or swarms of cyborgs. and special units like the Ogramechs, Dogs, and Mother Courage instill feeling of absolute dread when seeing them.

"Are we able to run into braindead enemies making each round boring?"
The AI is not braindead but it definitely needs work still. Enemies definitely add tension and push you around the map making each run feel a little different than the last. Personally I haven't found any rounds to be boring yet.

The aggro system and Hunter Killers are the two parts which need the most work in my opinion. The way aggro is supposed to work is that different enemies have different threat levels, and you also have a threat level. It feels poorly implemented at the moment with enemies determining you as a threat before you've even really done anything to piss them off. However, stealth is a viable option and enemies will be more distracted by each other than they are by you allowing for some daring escapes.

Hunter Killers feel necessary to keep players moving and as a bit of an ego check, but they definitely feel like they come out of the wood work far sooner than they should sometimes.

"Will I feel like I'm never safe?"
In the beginning and during solo play you feel very exposed, like you have to skitter through the battlefield looting only what you can get safely then rushing to extraction. Once you get established it feels a little bit safer playing solo, but you can still get into bad situations.

In multiplayer you have more of a safety in numbers feeling there's still the uneasy feeling of being exposed on a battlefield, but you've got someone who can watch your back and keep an eye out for danger on the horizon. Bring a couple buddies with you on a run and you'll feel pretty safe unless you try taking on large enemies or groups.

buddying up also makes the game more fun in my opinion so I hop around the different public lobbies until I find someone to run with.

"Is it similar to ARC where PVE can be seem more fun than just a regular pvp"
I haven't played ARC don't know if its similar.

The game is in Early Access my rule for EA is always if you don't love the game as it is currently don't buy it. I will say though I think that given the year and some change the game has been out it has improved by quite alot. So if it looks interesting but you aren't 100% sure give it another year and see where development has led and re-evaluate from there.

Overall I would say the gameplay can be a little janky at times, multiplayer definitely feels more fun than singleplayer, but what really hold my attention and keeps me coming back? It's the atmosphere and art direction.
I got a good 200+ hours out of the core gameplay loop. After that point I started to need additional content to keep me logging in. The game is in a very unpolished state and is very obviously incomplete.

There's a noticable amount of bugs and other undesirable inadequacies at this stage in development. None of which I would consider gamebreaking, mostly they are a minor inconvenience.
Right now the game is VERY EA. There are mechanics and systems which are poorly implimented and not thought well through which are namely stun, hunter killers, and the replacement water system. Tunnels are currently devoid of enemies, and are obviously still a work in progress. However, they are serviceable.

Imo the game itself is fun, but if you go in expecting a complete experience you will be left dissapointed. What brings me back to this game is the world building, the art style, and the scale/ horror of the conflicts that occur out in open for you to witness. It's a constant game of risk vs reward.

One counter point I'd like to bring up is that, while the AI isn't perfect the major factions aren't meant to kill you on sight. Enemy AI each have their own sets of priorities which you not being a part of any major faction leaves you pretty low on the list which means sometimes they will simply ignore you, while other times they may decide to turn you into paste. Not every encounter will play out the same.

I'd still recommend it as the playstyle the game encourages is pretty unique, and the bones of a good game are there. The dev's just need more time to fully bring it fruition. Bare in mind the dev team is roughly 12 people who are mostly artists, from what I've heard there's like 2 coders.
Dont buy it yet.
Really, dont.
Wait for further development (Much Further).

ive 130hrs in the game and quit after that tunnel system was added, it went downhill from there. trust me...the jenk glitches, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ai and grind is a serious issue and youll only waste your money since the games original concept, promises and advertising was rugpulled from under our feet.

ive 160 hrs in arc raiders. i quit that too when it became a cheaters paradise. haching everywher in it now just like tarkov. and the so called agression based match making is fine until griefers infiltrate into pve lobbies and mow everyone down for high end loot. avoid arc raiders like the toxic plague it is.
Game is jank and needs lots of work
