The Forever Winter

The Forever Winter

Was expecting a lot from the game...
But now I tried it, I'm not sure I will play it. I will start with the positives :

-The game looks great, the style, the universe and what is happening is really nice, and that what got me interested in the first place.

-I didn't play enough to understand if there is a deep story in which you will have an importance, but if not it's ok, this is not necessary for the game to be good, as the world seems to have many things to discover.

-The music is alright, I won't say it's some Russell Shaw or something like this, but it's quite good, fitting, it doesn't break the immersion, and the sounds are pretty good.

Now the less good, or negatives :

-The shooting is nice, but feels rigid at times, the reloads are so-so, not fitting what you actually need (the shotgun reloading for an exemple, not matter how many shells you have to add, the same reload animation will play), and in a game in which you can end up being surprised, in a way or an other, not being able to cancel the reload animation feels outdated. The red dots are so thick, it's not making me want to play them, only the one on the default rifle is in the limits of what I'd accept. I appreciate the ability of choosing between shoulder aiming and downsights aiming, the lack of repair mechanics and such, there is enough looting going every ways in modern games like that, focusing on fewer categories of loot (healing, weapon and associated loot, "money", objectives) is better, no need for temporary power ups, crafting, and other mechanics associated with looting.

-The movements feel clunky, at some point I felt the frustration I used to feel on some ps1 platformers, contact with obstacles and enemies is unintuitive, as long as you have nothing close to you, it's alright, but it can't always be the case, these few half robots crawling in front of you ? a wall of family fridges. You hid, but a wandering soldier is on the point to spot you and you want to take the initiative and run past him before he reacts ? Be sure to be at least 50 cm away from any part of his body unless you want to be stopped by his hitbox. That rock as tall as your ankle might block you, you neverknow.

-The inventory management is not very flexible and lacks many infos. You can open your inventory sometimes while looting a cache, but it is buggy and you can't interact with the cache at taht time, just the inventory. The weight of things isn't displayed. Some tabs such as the weapon customisation one isn't really intuitive. And it's unclear whether some of these weapon mods are actually useful or if they are just cosmetics, I would expect my rifle to have worse recoil if I take the stock away, but I don't seem to be able to find the info in the game, even if it were once at the beginning or something like that just to say it's only cosmetics it would be enough. I would say that the way the customisation of weapon seems to go is good, It's nice being able to modify your weapon down to things such as the stock, the magasines, and sights, especially if it has a real impact on gameplay.

-The enemies can spawn way too close from you, you can walk down a "street", thinking the road is clear, and you can move, but then 20-30 metres in front, spawn a troop of riflemen or a tank, you can't go back because you were moving away from enemies ? Well, now it's sandwich time, and you're part of it whether you want it or not.

-I might be a fan of infiltration games, but running in this game felt more like a viable strategy, even if you had to run through a group of enemies, as the enemies spotting you feels unbalanced, if not buggy, I had a robot spotting me while I was behind a wall I had to walk 100 metres to walk around and reach the robot in question, infiltration can feel really easy, then suddenly very hard. No matter how hard or easy it is, it's okay as long as its consistent.

-Although the game looks good, it doesn't look as "technically demanding" as it is, it has no right being so heavy on the gpu, I suppose the Unreal Engine strikes again. I ran the game in 1440p, with a 6700XT, at high settings and at 85% resolution, and I'm lucky if I go above 50 fps. If I want to run it at full resolution, medium is possible, but I still get some dips under 45-50 fps. The base settings set me at ultra and 60% resolution, I suppose based on my hardware if not a preset for everyone. If you had a 1080p tv which were starting to be common, 720p was painful on the ps3 back then already. I will have to come back to it almost 20 years later because I don't have a thousand dollar gpu ? No thanks.

In the end, I don't feel like I'm fighting in the game, I feel like I'm fighting the game, I want to get into it, but I feel like trying to buy a house and the front door's handle stays in my hand when I try to open it, and at the first step inside the parquet board broke under my weight, and the switch for the living room's light doesn't work, and... you get the idea.

I totally get why people like this game, if I were a bit less picky and maybe younger, with less strict standards, and less examples to compare it to, I would most likely get into it with no problem at all, but now, I already have a list of "perfect", and not perfect games that I enjoy playing anyway, and I don't want the not perfect part to get longer. I will most likely try it later, maybe in a year or something, I guess we'll see.

first off, its in EA way before it should have been because people were begging for it, second, not only does the game take place in LA but its also like the end of the world so everything gonna be really expensive, that's also why you gotta go and find more expensive things on the map and go to harder locations, if it really does bug you that much i would recommend coming back in a few months when they have optimized the game and fixed all the issues, like i said again it was released way before it should have been because the devs wanted to give people what they wanted and a taste of what it will be like, ive talked to the devs and ive became friends with one of them and they have said the game will be changing as they go on and that they will change things if the community wants it, your best option is just keep an eye for updates and wait for the game to be more polished.

Ok, but I couldn't have guessed it, I don't have the time to spend reading how the community asks for the game to release earlier than expected, it might be in early access, but it can mean a lot of things, I can accept flaws, especially if they are fixed over time, but I'm afraid some of the things such as the very poor optimisation aren't going to change with a snap of your fingers, and especially since the EA has been out for almost a year now and they say they plan to release the game out of EA a year after its launch. I don't see where I have talked about things being expensive and such, I didn't talk about the economy of the game as I felt like it worked, without it being special enough to be talked about. I really hope it will improve, it has a lot of potential, and like I said, I will most likely try it again later, but now, I can't get into it.

I share most if not all of OPs opinions.

But this thing cost me 20e and it gave me, so far, dozens of entertainment filled hours.

I also think it's going to get better.

Right now the game has a second breath because of the new quest line and skins.

Multiplayer is fun, too, making a lot of new gaming friends.

I'm carefully optimistic.

Yeah right, that's just bullsh*t marketing talk to put the blame for a sh*tty and rushed release onto their fanbase. Scummy AF. Please prove me wrong.

Played demo, agree with OP
I also agree with OP - im trying to have fun with it - i got hard stuck on one of the maps just now :(
I believe the devs can pull it off, if they don't run out of funds. It's going to be a long, bumpy road to get there though.
