curious about how the ai works
i havent played all that much, two raids and havent made it out alive yet, reson being it seems that the ai really focus the player. i remember promotional material saying that you arent hero yada yada but i cant seem to walk 5 feet without every ai in the area zeroing in on me. often times breaking contact from a fight they're already in just to go after me, its worth noting i havent picked up any super special loot that draws enemies yet, just some ammo and canteens. so im curious as to how the ai determine the player's threat level and what one can do to mitigate enemy aggressiveness.

That sounds odd, for me it's the exact opposite. As long as I keep away from the AI, it just ignores me. Although, to be fair, I usually make sure I trail behind active firefights so I can loot the dead without being disturbed. Normally, as long as there are opposing military units present, the AI will simply ignore you unless you walk right into its face. My advice is to try and lag behind active engagements. See what direction the engagement is moving in and try to follow it at a distance. Usually 40-50 meters is enough to be left alone (you can use Z to tag enemies and see how far away they are if you didn't know).

The AI is rigged at this point in time. Once you're within a certain range they will very often deliberately take paths to run into you even when you're undetected. I had this happen to me last night.
I was in an out of reach spot for a pack of zombie cyborg things was just standing there not far off from a route I needed to take. I waited about 8 minutes and they're not moving. As soon as I touch down to a spot they can path to they immediately move in my direction, without being alerted or in search mode.

out of the gate im having a difficult time even finding a way to stay that far away, the scorched graveyard or whatever is so tight it feels like im being deliberately funneled into engagements or ai will quite littery pop in 10 meters in front of me. do you suggest a different map perhaps to get more used to it? im just getting nuked pretty much immediately on the first one.

The 1st map is also not the best to cut your teeth on - very chaotic.

Go to Mech trenches and stay quiet. The patrols there are much more isolated and predictable, which will give you the time you need to learn the ropes.

Just take your time to learn the map, and observe AIs pathing. It helped me a lot going forwards.

And bonus, the trenches is a really beautiful map.

[Edit:] I'll maybe add that I died like a dog for quite a while in the beginning. It does take a little time to learn how to survive.

The initial start on Scorched Graveyard can be a pain, especially if you get the Timed Extract. I'd start from Cemetary as soon as you can, it gives you much more breathing room and the Pipe extract is a lot safer if you wait for any fighting near the mouth of it to clear out.

As far as being detected, enemies that are in a fight are, ironically, less dangerous. They will kill you if they have nothing better to do, basically, but if they're actively shooting at an enemy you can practically walk up and steal their pants.

I think shadows work too? I haven't fully tested this but I have been right next to a mech and they don't see me, but I am also not moving for a bit until they continue their path. It's almost like in a thinking state before it returns to it's path. This had been done so with squads moving through the map as well and in the crouch position only.

I'd stick with the first map. Wait a minute maybe before stepping too far out into where the bunkers are. If you see any zombies off in the distance when you first start in or in close proximity, then either hide in one of the bunker areas for them to pass, or climb over to where the steel beams are near the start. If there aren't cyborg zombies then just wait for the a.i. to fight among themselves.

DO NOT use your shotgun unless you really have to otherwise you'll draw the attention of all the minimobs. Or use the shotgun to draw attention of an opposing minimob of the cyberzombies to cross paths (which can be tricky and dangerious).

I highly suggest not using your weapons at all. Stay low, and don't run too much. The more movement you have the greater the sound detection. Just pretend everything you do can draw attention if you do it too fast or too often. Super paranoia for the win.

Hope this helps. Oh... and if you show up and there's huge stacks of skulls? There's no stealthing that so just pick a spot where you can easily pick your stuff back up after you die. Good luck.

Having the same issue... I'm still on an early Drone Component quest, and every time I go out; I get pinpointed by whatever AI is in the area.
Same on water runs, into the typical zone people farm.
Oh, one tip for when you're first starting and get a Timed Extract:

If there's an enemy squad camping the extract zone, go around the rock pillar across from them and take a shot at them so they chase you. They'll run towards you, which will let you do the Scooby-Doo maneuver around the other side of the rock pillar to reach the extract.

Activate it, and run back to the rock pillar. The enemies you lured will have gotten bored and started wandering back to their starting location, and will immediately get mobbed by the zombies that show up as the timer counts down. Grab your popcorn and watch them fight it out until the timer counts down, then you can run in and hit the extract button while they're distracted.

Maybe another tip would be to remember to only fight from cover.
Get to one of the bunkers first before you so much as pull a trigger.

Move crouched at all times. Walking upright brings extra attention. Looting stuff brings attention to you.

Sprinting brings a huge amount of attention, so do that only when absolutely needed.

I've had people walk by me while I motionless and crouched and not even look my way. If you see the attention circle apear over their heads they are considering you a threat, back away and break line of site if possible, then move away from where you broke line of sight as they sometimes walk to the last place they see you or heard you make noise.

It just works - Todd

Right now the AI feels very, very artificial, like it constantly knows where you are and is intentionally spawning and moving enemies towards you, which makes the stealth feel more luck based than skill based.
