what gun levels gives you?

at the moment the only thing i know, is that it provides you with the ability to put mods on weapons, like the svd for example, you can only put a scope on it once it reaches level 9

Leveling up guns allows you to buy the better parts for them in the vendors. The gas systems for guns are worth it, gives you a big chunk of damage per bullet

Some mods are restricted behind levels to attach to guns, like drum mags. From what I hear besides the mods and the stats they bring, it also improves handling, but I've not tested this as it may be more tied to personal comfort with a weapon and Prestige levels. If you like a gun, use the gun, seems like fine wisdom here.

higher weapon level allows for higher level mods IE- Higher level upper assembly for a SMG allows you to equip optics, Higher level Gas Sytems increase your Dmg, Higher Level Mag more ammo ect.

Also you can install any mod regardless of your lvl, weapon lvl only unlocks those mods for purchase, if you find mods in the world you can install them regardless of lvl.

I'm level 31 with the ak family and the last three mags including the drum are still not unlocked. Not a big deal I have found about 30 of them from looting. Though apparently there is a 100rd drum and not just the 95rd. My friend stumbled onto one today. I'm betting the max weapon level is either 50 or 100. It would be great if leveling a weapon slightly improved on its stats.

Also the G36 max on item unlocks is level 19. It still continues to level after that point.

It allows you to buy functional mods from vendors: barrels, magazines, etc. However, you can still use dropped mods you have if they are compatible with the gun. For example, the SCAR has a 50-round magazine and I couldn't buy it at level 1, but I had one in my stash and used it instead.

You can see ALL of the buyable mods for the guns if you go to Grillo and use the "ALL" filter option. The ones you can't buy yet are red and say "Weapon XP Too Low". Hope this helps someone. I do wish they said the requires level here tbh

Edit: This is per Vendor and Vendor level. It is relevant to the weapons they sell and your tier with that individual Vendor as to what you can see.
