I've been playing since a week after launch and honestly can't get enough of it. There IS jank, it IS extremely early access, but a lot of the jank is avoidable and results in losses that are very easy to either deal with or recover from.

One thing to be aware of though. You WILL die in this game, and you will die a LOT. Again and again, in very stupid ways. No death is impossible to recover from, and there is always someone willing to lend a hand if you need it. The deaths lead to learning, and you feel a real sense of growth as you get better at slinking around, looting the dregs of cataclysmic battles you're not meant to take part in and picking off the stragglers as needed.

If you keep at it long enough though, as myself and others have found, you *do* eventually become The Guy :tm:. Even then, mechs and hunter killers can mow me and co. down with ease sometimes, but only if we bite off more than we can chew.

The water thing is not an issue whatsoever. You can hold 55 days of water in your Innards (the personal hub area) unupgraded, and up to like 80 days of water with the upgrades. It is extremely easy to stack up water as well as water replenishment items, such that after only a week of on and off play, you'll not need to worry about having your items and hub wiped for another 3 months if you decided to take a break. Even then, you keep your EXP and weapon levels.

The devs are amazing. The discord server is great for rounding up a squad and having a good time in voice. The community is one of the best in gaming right now, almost rivalling that of Helldivers 2 at launch (if you switch the patriotism with scav spirit).

Lastly, regarding performance, it's only an issue if you're like me playing on an older rig (2070 RTX Super and a 9700K CPU) you'll have fps drops on some maps, but I found that dropping the graphics settings down had very little effect on how gorgeous the game looks while near doubling my FPS. The game's in an early stage and needs optimization, but it can definitely be worked around.

Anyway uh, thanks for coming to my TED talk. C:

Not much maps to play on it.

I think if you want to support dev it's worth it. For gameplay alone - it's pretty ok, it has good vibe.

But definitely far from full product overall.

Personally, I'm happy I bought it, hope it will keep getting better until it's a huge hit.

its better to let it develop for now

This is basically a demo at best content wise and you will quickly start repeating content
I think it will be great in the future

There are plenty of videos on youtube that showcase the gameplay for Forever Winter, and there will be a free demo with a subset of the present features coming later this month. Details for that were given out in the Q&A: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nortNdM8lA&t=1011s

If you're actually on the fence, you'll get far better answers from those whether the game is for you than from listening to people in a steam forum. Half the people on here just swing through to whine rather than say anything constructive.

What is there is fun, but there really isn't any endgame yet afaik so maybe more for casuals ironically considering the water discussions.

Btw its real easy to get those normally, after getting my first rack with multiple large containers, water was often at the bottom of priorities to bring with, especially now with THE RACK that can hold up to 8.

Sure its even more frustrating to get downed when you've got a full rack with valuables and even Gacha Boxes, but that's supposed to enhance the thrill and reward feeling when you do make it back.

Yes! Games like these are rare.

In a word yes. The game feels insanely difficult and stressful when you first jump in and start learning how to play it. I'm now at 50+ hours in and still learning to do cool new things. Complete missions, modify weapons and although I still get destroyed once in awhile I can really bring the pain too. 40mm high explosive grades and squad automatic weapons are your friend. Game kicks ass and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Weird. I'm at 37 hours and can say that it's a walk in the park since 10 hours in. I've seen literally everything the game has to offer and nothing can touch me and it's pretty much boring as heck now. There's no meat to it

Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys. I just played the demo and its everything I had expected/hoped it to be. I can see its very rough around the edges but I haven't felt that level of anxiety while playing a game for a while. I got the same sort of rush as I did when playing STALKER Anomaly. I'm defiantly going to pick this up after playing the demo. Iv very impressed with what they have so far, I hope they keep developing this as it has so much potential.

if your solo, no. the biggest issue for me is the AI. far too many times they get stuck. 3 toothies spawn at a time. cyborgs spawning right on me. gate keeping of npcs. i only die because i have no choice but to die. Drones spawning and not moving. stuff like that. Love the game but its way to unforgiving for solo play.

If you watched some gameplay videos and you thought "damn that 3P view is bad, the player char takes too much screen", well, it is. I want to see my surroundings, that should be the focus, not my char.
And as others mentioned, enemies can and will spawn right on top of you. Tanks flying around and so on.
If you ask me, i´d wait and keep my eye on.

I am glad I did not wait. I have lots of fun.

no
If you buy this, you're gambling on its potential. It's an early release, incomplete game. If you're on the fence, try the demo to see if you like the gameplay loop.

I have high hopes, so I purchased and found I liked the loop, but I did so understanding the gamble.

Thanks. I bought it and having a lot of fun with it. For what it is right now it's looking very promising.
