The Forever Winter

Honest review after nineteen hours
Like many, i will say that this game has potential.

I don't really mind the random spawns, or the overall difficulty of the game- however i do have some gripes.

your movement is chunky, it's like i'm playing a more alpha version of the first mass effect at times, at others i'm entirely immobile.

so far the only reliably stable map scorched- everywhere else i'm falling through the floor and into the games entities- it's amazing being in the backrooms as the player, however the portals to get there are way too many.

there needs to be something done about the picking up destroyed weapons on the field, i have to look up into the sky or across the map to even get a flash of a hint that it even sensed the gun, let alone the ability to pick it up.

this game makes me frustrated at times, and i'm not someone who is easy to frustrate. I do really like this game, snapping headshots feels satisfying, i like the assets used and the style of the game as a whole. it takes some adjustments but as you play you do get better, you do find yourself immersed in it at times, and i dont even have a headset.

this game is definitely going to go places, but it needs more work. i am getting stuck on assets that shouldn't have a hitbox the size of an empire state building- there needs to be removed restrictions on mantle parts of the map as well, why can i jump out of a trench on one side but not the other despite both sides being same height and free of obstruction?

i'm not sure if the enemies are unbalanced deliberately or by accident, but i don't really know if i want that change as it adds an element of spice and realism- one dude taking down mechs is properly hard and i do not think it should ever be easy.

the hired guns are borderline useless- they need so much more work, and they need to be able to differentiate between who i'm trying to murk at any given time. if i have beef with the ruskans, *we only have beef with the ruskans*, i don't need to drop every body i see as i can only loot so much at any given time.

the water system is a bit trappy, arguably unethical in some regards. i think it is a nice touch in an alpha to keep us coming back to see your changes, but ultimately it needs to be turned into a setting that can be toggled in the sense that we don't lose all our things should IRL environments change. (thinking military personal, financial circumstances etc.)

is there any way we can bolster in game econ? like a "sell all trade items/junk" button? if there is one, i haven't found it yet, and the gun spec system is a little confusing at times too- is there a way to rename loadouts?

we need to work on the player stun- getting blasted by anything in this game sends the character into windows xp safe mode- there is no getting away when you get snuck up on, no opportunity to even turn your camera to fight back- its just instadeath.

90% of this game is based on player movement- you gave me GTA level opportunity of exploration and frogger level movement capabilities, why? it just feels so crude and rudimentary- wouldn't you have put more effort into the movement on a movement based game?

i have spent nineteen hours in game so far, and all in all, i rate it 7/10, janky controls, the player feels kinda sluggish as the movement doesn't always match the input, placeholder invisible walls and floors, it all kinda detracts from things.

oh, and sometimes the game just throws handicaps at me? like last match, i couldn't shoot, ADS, or run. neat glitch, kinda fun, don't recommend.

please do not give up on this game, i didn't know i could enjoy videogames like i did as a kid until i came across this one. i haven't felt this good in years m8, i need more.

i will continue playing, and as i find more wrong, i will put it here. this game is absolutely playable, it is however harsh and incredibly unforgiving- i am a dark souls veteran, from the beginning, and this is even hard for me in non enjoyable ways at times- HOWEVER most of the time it operates RELIABLY.

i truly love what is being done here with this game, you are doing the best you can with what you have, and i will undoubtedly support it whole and complete, this is my COD, i truly love spending time on this game. but i repeat, it needs work, please don't stop.
