If I even want to start the game, it has to install Epic Games Framework.
That seems like a pretty clear cut requirement to me.
Correct, it does not.
Not for me, is it available through epic games? It pulls up steam for me and then the game.
For example, I do have epic to play Fortnite with my son - it pulls it up everytime but not for Forever Winter.
The Epic Games Store is slipped in the backdoor if it's not already installed (possibly a contractual due to using UE5), TFW is available on the EGS, the Epic Games Framework stuff is required for error reporting, cross-store friend play and possibly other shenanigans, Steam (only) users can uninstall it all with no ill effects whatsoever. The added bumph is an annoyance but it's far from a requirement
You can uninstall it on first launch, and it never asks you to reinstall or link anything.
I've played co-op without it installed.
Yes, it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing to do. No, it isn't mandatory.
