Can steam versions of the game play multiplayer with the open source version?

I was thinking about this game and Star Ruler 1 recently and I installed both of them, then I find out the dev studio is no more. A horrible thing to learn. But I was curious if multiplayer works between steam and opensource? I'm tempted to get some friends to try this.

They should be compatible unless a change has been made in your fork of the opensource game!

There's been some back-and-forth on this.

Theoretically, crossplay between OpenSR (I can't speak for other forks) and the commercial builds works just fine, because there have been no breaking changes to the Starflare binaries (barely any changes, really) and the game data is practically identical. However, there's been some instances where crossplay compatibility was called into question... but most, if not all, of these seem to have been due to a combination of OS-commercial mixing and specific mods.

At any rate, thanks to the OpenSR Launchpad, OpenSR is easy enough to install that crossplay issues can be circumvented if they do occur.
