Theoretically, crossplay between OpenSR (I can't speak for other forks) and the commercial builds works just fine, because there have been no breaking changes to the Starflare binaries (barely any changes, really) and the game data is practically identical. However, there's been some instances where crossplay compatibility was called into question... but most, if not all, of these seem to have been due to a combination of OS-commercial mixing and specific mods.
At any rate, thanks to the OpenSR Launchpad, OpenSR is easy enough to install that crossplay issues can be circumvented if they do occur.
