No one uses them in any serious design, there simply not practical anymore, it use to be that they didnt destroy your ship upon taking damage and they had other benefits as well, but now they dont.
Perhaps if someone were making a really tanky ship and surrounded it in some amazing defense then it would be viable.
It explodes when the core hex is destroyed.
This means it can be used safely with anything that provides a health increase.
Namely the following for general play:
Bulkheads - Increased cost but able to be grabbed very early and cheaply even if you dont take that path much further.
NanoMesh - Increases health by a nice bit for AM.
For hull specifics it is more reliable and safe on:
Destroyer Hull - 6x Health
Sations - 4x Health
Carrier - 2x Healh
For hulls you should avoid it on:
Titants
Collusus
Both due to the much lower health a single hex has for these making it a lot harder to offset
I can understand that point of view, but there are some other differences between the two beyond just size. Really though, I'd say the Colossus Hull is mainly to satisfy those who really enjoy ship designing and big later-game ships.
