Star Ruler 2
A few questions
This game is, well, poorly documented. Under game options, what does system size do? Is it the number of planets or diameter of the system? Can only level 5 planets build orbitals? What does ship size mean? I noticed it scales the stats, but not the internal ship tiles.

How many level five planets do you build in your games? I'm getting good at leavening them. Their massive resource base makes several of them difficult to create.

System Size is diameter of system.

Planets need a source of labour to build anything that needs labour. Either from resource importing or from a factory.

Ship size is exactly that the size of the ship, it well change not just the stats but also costs both money and labour and also the size of the ship in game. Tiles are set to a set amount based upon the hull type.

Level 5 planets if on default settings you'll normally only have 1 and maybe a Level 4 or 3 per game.
Just one level 5? What do you with all the other level 1/2 planets not linked to your home world? I realize you link labor resource planets (iron) to your home world.
The homeworld isn't usually the planet you want to level though. Scalable resources are better, if available.
On recommened/default settings you'll rarely have enough for two level 5's.
1) Define scalable resources?
2) Please define default settings. 3 players and a spiral galaxy with 60 systems?

Again, the Wiki is rather anemic.
1) Define scalable resources?

A planet resource who's effects scale with planet level. IE, bigger bonus or effect for being higher level.

2) Please define default settings. 3 players and a spiral galaxy with 60 systems?

I would say it refers to the the default (or suggested) number of planets (and there for resources) available to each race. Which is 80-100 planets or so. What that equates to in actual systems depends on the Planet Frequency setting of the map. The default 100% setting equates to an average of about 4 per system.

At that size, the game's pacing will be relatively quick and there will be action and conflict in a reasonably short amount of time. It also will give you enough resources to build some moderately well sized ships but won't allow for anything too crazy to happen. SR2 doesn't really have a scaling limit but the bigger the game gets, the better the chances of things (including imbalances) of getting out of hand.

Which resources scale?
ColSaid here, a Tier I can go up to Lv 3, Tier II can Lv up to ( forgot), Tier III plt to Lv 5. To Lv up a Tier II you'll need a Tier I, as well as one more food, (which you can take from the Tier I plt).
In the game if you look up to the right you will see a Tab "Commumity" this will give you some information on game play. also you can go to Blind Mine web site for more info. Also there is more infomation if you use "search this discussions" in the openning page" at to top right. Sometime this is faster then waitting for someone here. There are also "guides" that is very helpfull. At lest it has be for me. ColSaid (Ret.)

Which resources scale?

There are about a half dozen or so. They all tell you that they do and how when you mouse over them. You don't need a wiki to tell you that, it's all in game.

It's only in the game if those planets spawn on the map :)

I play the game on-and-off, so often I need to check something about a resource. If I remember the name of that resource, I can use the in-game search to find one on the map and read the popup, but if I don't play for a few weeks I tend to forget the names. Then I have to scroll around the map, search for a resource that may not even exist in that galaxy.

Usually it's faster to just dig through game files, which I'm thankfully fully comfortable with :)

Which resources scale?

In-game, scalable resources have a tiny lightning-bolt symbol in the lower right corner of the resource icon. They can't be exported, but their effects improve (and they sometimes get new ones) as they level.

For example, a scalable Energy planet, Cyllium, has 10% bonus Energy pressure on level 0, but 60% on level 5. If you connect a resource that gives 10 Energy to a level 5 Cyllium, you get 16 Energy pressure. It also generates artifacts for you, and if your Cyllium planet is level 4 or higher, activating artifacts in that planet's system is 25% cheaper.

Resource data is located in Steam\SteamApps\common\Star Ruler 2\data\resources\
The data files themselves can be a bit difficult to understand if you don't have any background in programming.

Subfolder "scalable" has, well, scalable resources. Reading from the data files, here's a summary of those resources, with their affinities and effects. All effects depend on planet level.
  1. Allondium (Influence)
    • bonus influence pressure on that planet
    • diplomacy card bonuses (reduced cost etc)
  2. Cyllium (Energy)
    • bonus energypressure on that planet
    • spawns artifacts, artifacts are cheaper in system
  3. FTL (no affinity)
    • generates FTL
    • free FTL from system, can see fleets in FTL
  4. Phosphate (no affinity)
    • bonus fleet efficiency in allied systems
  5. Vast Plains (no affinity)
    • reduced building maintenance
    • large surface area
  6. Quartz (Labor)
    • free Labor storage
    • generates labor when you activate an artifact
  7. Cremin Ferns (Money)
    • reduces engine maintenance on ships
    • needs only food and water to level, but large amounts of those
    • gets bonus pressure of different resources as it levels
I'm not sure, but I think that Cremin Ferns are available only in expansion, and everything else is in the base game.

Good luck :)

Sure. But if it's not spawned on the map, what does it matter what it does?

Yes. Pretty positive that Cremlins are WotH only.

There is also the Research resource that technically is and isn't a scalable. It doesn't scale with planet level like all the others. It simply scales with population. Not really like the others.

Sometimes it helps me decide which level of Protoplanet activation to choose, and sometimes I'm just curious :D

Good point, I forgot about that one!

Phasite, gives 1 Research pressure for every 5 population, but unlike scalables this one can be exported. Just connect it to your main planet and you're done :)

I don't recall ever seeing a scalable spawn from a protoplanet. Which makes me think they cannot be spawned from L1 or L2 at all. I'm certainly not going to use my protoplanets to spawn L0 resources... So kind of moot, in my opinion.

Anyways, my point was mainly that pretty much the information you need about planet resources is built in in-game when they're on the map and actually relevant. I suppose there are a few technical game-mechanics details that might be still vague but it's not like the game interface keeps you blind to what resource types do. At least not if you bother to read the mouse-overs.

Thanks Piccolo. Those are the details I was looking for.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply that they could spawn, I meant that as a more general remark. As far as I know, scalables can't be spawned from Protoplanets at all. Looking at game files, scalables don't have a level given at all! I still want to know all of the possible spawns before choosing :)

For example, I don't know if those special level 0 resources that give 10 pressure can spawn from Protoplanet. If they can, it may be worth it to use it when low on energy income, as waiting for a level 2 could take forever. Looking at the game files, those resources are not in a level0 folder, but they do have a "Level: 0" definition, so I'd say that yes, they probably can. I also never did use a Protoplanet for a level 0 :)

That's true most of the time, but sometimes I'd like to check something even when the game's not running. For example when people ask stuff about resources :)

I'm mostly satisfied with digging through the files for info, especially since I play the game modded (thanks, Rising Stars team!) so a Wiki or something wouldn't help much anyway :) I'm mostly acting as a devil's advocate here, although I do think it would be nice to have something like that for new players. The game is not easy to get into, so any little bit could help.

(offtopic PS: Love your shipsets, dolynick. Playing a Star Trek (Federation) right now, the models are gorgeus. Thank you!)
