Your circles indicate the path that your mechanics will service, so the circles just needs to connect to one another. You'll also notice the ride highlighted when you put a circle on it, that should mean that the ride is covered by whatever mechanic you place inside that work area. Placing the mechanic in the work area is how you assign the mechanic to that work area. I've also noticed that the mechanics walk to the ride exits when repairing them, so I always make sure to cover the entire path of the ride exit just in case they don't know how to reach the ride exits when they need to repair the ride.
