They figured that castlevania needed revived, but doing so, they twisted things around, the story, how the characters look, and how each character is different. They shouldn't have asumed this, as castlevania to me and many fans, have always felt that castlevania has always been there, never dead, and it will never die. They shouldn't have changed things either.
Also remember that mercurysteam made this, not the original castlevania developers.
I think they used a god of war engine, and just updated it for lords of shadow 1, then again for los 2.
I felt though that the old castlevania games such as the classics and metroidvanias such as symphony of the night, were good just the way they were, especially sotn.
But I would always enjoy extra content such as more secret rooms or areas to visit, and more characters to play as, as long as you start in sotn with alucard, then you get to be richter and maria, as well as extra characters such as simon and trevor belmont, shanoa, soma, and many others, but like I mentioned, extra areas within the castle and other places, as well as more items, gear, swords, armor and other things to find or buy from a shop, that would be awesome if they could make another sotn with these extra things put in it.
