Improving Relations
I was playing turkey and decided to attack Syria and annex them.

All the world became red to me, and without I even noticing I had japan troops invading me.

What are the best ways to improve relations with other countries?

Treaties: Cultural Exchange, Economic Aid, Economic Partnership, to name a few. The "Foreign Aid" slider in your budget tab will progressivley increase relations with all nations if funded in the green.

So the only way to globally improve relations without having to do treaties one by one is by the foreign aid slider? No other way?

You can also trade technologies, money, or regions with other countries for a boost in relations (depending on the value of the items being traded), but this is also on a one-by-one basis. You can sign a single treaty with multiple countries at once given they don't already hate you, so you can increase relations with all of the signatories simultaneously.

The noble cause treaty improves relations between signatories, but reduces relations with nations who aren't a member of the treaty.

Other than treaties and the foreign aid slider, though, the best way to maintain good relations is to not go around invading countries that have decent relations with you and/or the rest of the world.

Isn't there a way to annex someone without ruining all your relations?

There is apparently now a way to peacefully annex someone you have good relations with and who shares at least 1 language or religion, but I don't how. Other than that, no, annexations are viewed as aggressive and counter-productive when it comes to maintaining good relations with other nations. If Turkey invaded and annexed Syria in real life, I doubt the majority of the world would look upon it favorably.

what about if syria was in war with israel and turkey joined the war to help and annex syria? Would turkey still be a bad guy?

You can improve relations by:

Setting propaganda budget 0
Setting Foreing aid budget Maximum
Setting your goverment type same as side that you want to be friend.
Joining into all same treaties that who you want to be friend with
Setting laws same as country you want to be friend have.
Making sure that no langue or religion that is major in that other country is not illigal in your country.

You can also propose cultural exchange and new treaties with them.

Accepting desired country's debt would improve relations by 10 points. However if relations is -80 or below, the desired country will refuse to allow you to accept their debt.

Trade negotiations is also another way to improve relations.

Its funny because it is supposed to be a simulation. Could you imagine if you did those things in the real world? How could you not expect the world to not look nicely on annexation. If I remember correctly, you could build military coalitions through treaties and mutual defense treaties. Perhaps you could go the route of containment if you truly dislike the country for whatever reasons, but in defense pacts I believe members tend to have really green relations with you and as long as you inform them and they agree to go to war, you can. Annexation always seems bad in any scenario. Occupation seems simpler depending on your economy and scale of occupation.

I found that it's very easy to increase relations with all nations, by occupying one, and then send the free region treaty. The war itself doesn't end with free region, so you can occupy again, and free it again. I did this until all of the nations became green on the relations map, even the nation i played this free region game with. :D It's basically a "bug" in my opinion, it felt like cheating, but it works...

edit: the bigger the country you occupy, the bigger the relation boost you get with one release.

Simulation? This game doesn't simulate anything, it's not even remotely close to real world affairs. It's a very old game with very simplified mechanics and simulations, it is VERY VERY abstract and simplified.

And that makes it bad?

That fact that you don't like the simulation doesn't prevent it from being a simulation.
