I remember that in the client code one could modify where textures are loaded from, if I modify that value maybe a custom stars texture could be forced in.
Now that sounds exciting, if that works then a total texture overhaul would be imminent.

4K cloud textures. Considering 8K version. Courtesy of NASA who provided high resolution images from their website.
Credit goes to ZDisket for providing me with insight and the default textures.
Will be available soon, a seperate download will be available of any additional textures added (clouds, etc), for those who already downloaded the Earth textures.
You mean the white highlighting that appears when you select a country, right?
I'm not entirely sure how that is rendered, can't find any textures related to it.
After some changes, OBM will now use the "high" texture setting in the game. This will require a redownload of the entire mod. Sorry you folks with bandwidth limits, won't happen again.
NOTE: a new download for the updated earth textures will become available with the next release (version 0.2.)
For any tech savvy folks; batch rename the earth textures from "earth_256_01" to "earth_512_01" etc (I recommend the BulkRenameUtility software for this.) Might save you some time (and bandwidth.)
What is the highest resolution the textures could possibly be?
Good question. I'm currently experimenting with an 8K cloud texture and it works just fine. However I had to blur the entire image a tad because the small details simply caused a lot of flickering in-game. Not very pleasant to look at. This flickering got even worse at 16K.
As for the earth textures, 2K is the limit. There simply isn't enough detail on the original maps to warrant any higher resolution versions, it would only render as a blurry mess. Need even larger and more detailed satellite maps from NASA.
We haven't come that far yet. We were recently able to export and re-import a model (the skybox) into the game.
