It only asked me for it the first time, then I canceled and tried again, now it seems to work fine without asking me for a key.
Sorry to hear it you cannot access your copy of Anno 1701 - History Edition.
In case you haven't resolved it yet, most Ubisoft games purchased on Steam do not require an activation key.
A digital license is pushed to your Ubisoft account when you launch the game in Steam for the first time, and link it to the Ubisoft account.
Once activated this way, the game cannot be activated on another Ubisoft account.
Please download and install a new version of Ubisoft Connect from its official website: Download Ubisoft Connect[www.ubisoft.com]
IMPORTANT! Run Ubisoft Connect and Steam clients as administrator and try again:

Sometimes you will need to close Ubisoft Connect completely (not just minimise it to the system tray) and then launch the game from Steam, for accounts to link correctly.
Let us know if you have any further questions.
Apologies for the late reply.
In case you still need assistance, if you have downloaded Ubisoft Connect (formerly Uplay) client along with the game via Steam, chances are this is an old, outdated version that may not be able to connect to the servers any more.
Please download and install the latest version from its official website: Download Ubisoft Connect[www.ubisoft.com]
and run Ubisoft Connect as administrator.
Make sure Ubisoft Connect and the game are installed on the C drive.
You need to link your Steam account with a Ubisoft account - Linking your Steam and Ubisoft accounts[www.ubisoft.com]
Make sure Ubisoft Connect (UC.exe file) is allowed via Windows firewall, as Ubisoft core services are needed.
If you are using any other security software / antivirus, add the UC.exe to their whitelist as well. You may need to check FAQs on the software's website.
Let us know if any of it helped.
