Carmageddon Max Pack

Carmageddon Max Pack

3dfx is just like hires in the original version
hires was however removed from the later versions so it is 3dfx or lores.

It's not true, hires is included in every full version of Carmageddon (not in demos).

3dfx working in hires, but it is hardware accelerated, so look nicer (even too nice).

You can run 3dfx with original (CD) version - just install 3dfx / voodoo patch and *proper* version of DOSBox and nGlide (!). (Both included in GOG/Steam versions). Or use real hardware. Note: 3dfx patch have corrupted font + txt included, which crash normal execs then... of course fixed in 95RPP.

Most of the screen shoots here are made in '3dfx' accelerated mode, so you can compare.

i have played both and they look exactly the same.

So as you see hires is not removed ;) .

If you are using Steam version you should have everything installed properly, just use 95RPP to fix the crash issues and have all options available.

If you are using different version I'm afraid you are running wrong exec, since 3dfx exec can't be running without 3dfx libraries until you will not disable the acceleration with command line switch. Or wrong DOSBox version which doesn't support 3d acceleration. Look at RoadReaction and GLIDOS help for example.

hires was removed with the addition of 3dfx.
rc2sm Aug 21, 2015 @ 8:32am
Since 3dfx using hires resources, hires must be available!!! look for DATA\64X48X8 directory!!!
To run stand alone CD version with hires you need to run "CARM95.EXE -hires" to play hires mode (or other DOS exec, but it require DOSBox to run hires, lores can be started directly if path is OK). For the Steam / GOG version you have 95RPP setup-launcher.

the readme file specifically states that hires have been removed in favor of 3dfx(or at least that it have been removed). 3dfx could possibly be less resource heavy though as it uses hardware rather than software.

Resources are for cockpits, so they can't be removed, really. The 3dfx patch add new files not removing anything. Maybe the specific 3dfx exec can't be running in software hires mode, but hires is available, just try other execs (Note: error like "wanted 2, got 2" may appear due to corrupted font included with this patch).
you are wrong. just read the readme.txt file in the game`s folder.

You mean this?
HIRES
-----
Because of the 3DFX version there is no Hi-res support in the Max Pack
Once again... The font file is corrupted, so hires may not work, depend of used exec. It need just simple fix to work with all execs. Win 95 version working in hires out of a box, just need -hires parameter. I think they updated the MaxPack with 3dfx patch, then find out the DOS hires stop working and they put such information instead of searching for source of the problem and fix it.

If you have Steam version please use the 95RPP, it will fix that font file and few more files (critical only) and allow to run every of default modes without crashes.

I'm recommending to use 95RPP, but if you want to fix that corrupted font header by your self, here is the quick tutorial for you:

1. Make sure your \DATA\64X48X8\FONTS\NEWBIGGR.PIX is 3068 Bytes long - it is size of file with corrupted header.

2. open this file in hex editor, you should see this:
0000000000: 00 00 00 12 00 00 00 08 - 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 02 ↕ ◘ ☻ ☻ 0000000010: 00 00 00 3D 00 00 00 1C - 03 00 10 00 10 00 BB 00 = ♥ ► ► » 0000000020: 00 00 00 00 00 61 3A 6E - 65 77 62 69 67 67 72 2E a:newbiggr. 0000000030: 62 6D 70 00 00 00 00 21 - 00 00 0B B8 00 00 0B B0 bmp ! ♂¸ ♂°

3. edit the bytes as follows:
0000000000: 00 00 00 12 00 00 00 08 - 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 02 ↕ ◘ ☻ ☻ 0000000010: 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 18 - 03 00 10 00 10 00 BB 00 ♥ ► ► » 0000000020: 00 00 00 00 08 00 5D 6E - 65 77 62 69 67 67 72 2E ◘ ]newbiggr. 0000000030: 70 69 78 00 00 00 00 21 - 00 00 0B B8 00 00 0B B0 pix ! ♂¸ ♂°

In other words:
00000013: 3D 03 00000017: 1C 18 00000024: 00 08 00000025: 61 00 00000026: 3A 5D 00000030: 62 70 00000031: 6D 69 00000032: 70 78

4. Then delete the 4 "00" Bytes from 00000020 to 00000023, so result file should be 3064 Bytes long.
0000000000: 00 00 00 12 00 00 00 08 │ 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 02 ↕ ◘ ☻ ☻ 0000000010: 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 18 │ 03 00 10 00 10 00 BB 00 ♥ ↑♥ ► ► » 0000000020: 08 00 5D 6E 65 77 62 69 │ 67 67 72 2E 70 69 78 00 ◘ ]newbiggr.pix 0000000030: 00 00 00 21 00 00 0B B8 │ 00 00 0B B0 00 00 00 01 ! ♂¸ ♂° ☺
If it match the above save it.

5. Make sure you have wrong file in Splat Pack and replace it with the one you have just fixed for C1. Note: Do not replace if size is different than 3068 Bytes!

That's it, you can enjoy the hires mode with regular DOS execs :) .

Edit: end of edit, please read :)

most people do not use hex editors so please upload the edited file. one problem remains however and that is the disabled command.

This font file is patched in 95RPP which also fix other *critical* problems.
Also it is fixed in UCP - additional fixes and options.
For Steam / GOG you can use them both together, for CD version UCP only (C1).
To configure keys use CKB - start it from Windows (for C1 and C2, no matter if game is running inside or outside of DOSBox).

This font fix isn't required for 3dfx version, but allow to run software mode with non 3dfx execs.
the hires command is still removed. have anybody programmed it back in?

I really don't understand what you are trying to do... DOS execs have hires mode implemented, but running directly from Windows will not start in hires (even wit -hires parameter, must have DOS environment to work), Windows execs have hires either (working), 3dfx work in hires, so this is not necessary, but if runnning with -novoodoo parameter -hires parameter may be specified (as is in GOG/Steam release - voodoo exec is used here).

About which version you are talking about and which exec and how you are try to run it?

I must go now, sorry.
in the original version, both executables supported the -hires command. that command was removed in the max pack and splat pack.
