3dfx working in hires, but it is hardware accelerated, so look nicer (even too nice).
You can run 3dfx with original (CD) version - just install 3dfx / voodoo patch and *proper* version of DOSBox and nGlide (!). (Both included in GOG/Steam versions). Or use real hardware. Note: 3dfx patch have corrupted font + txt included, which crash normal execs then... of course fixed in 95RPP.
Most of the screen shoots here are made in '3dfx' accelerated mode, so you can compare.
If you are using Steam version you should have everything installed properly, just use 95RPP to fix the crash issues and have all options available.
If you are using different version I'm afraid you are running wrong exec, since 3dfx exec can't be running without 3dfx libraries until you will not disable the acceleration with command line switch. Or wrong DOSBox version which doesn't support 3d acceleration. Look at RoadReaction and GLIDOS help for example.
To run stand alone CD version with hires you need to run "CARM95.EXE -hires" to play hires mode (or other DOS exec, but it require DOSBox to run hires, lores can be started directly if path is OK). For the Steam / GOG version you have 95RPP setup-launcher.
Once again... The font file is corrupted, so hires may not work, depend of used exec. It need just simple fix to work with all execs. Win 95 version working in hires out of a box, just need -hires parameter. I think they updated the MaxPack with 3dfx patch, then find out the DOS hires stop working and they put such information instead of searching for source of the problem and fix it.
If you have Steam version please use the 95RPP, it will fix that font file and few more files (critical only) and allow to run every of default modes without crashes.
I'm recommending to use 95RPP, but if you want to fix that corrupted font header by your self, here is the quick tutorial for you:
1. Make sure your \DATA\64X48X8\FONTS\NEWBIGGR.PIX is 3068 Bytes long - it is size of file with corrupted header.
2. open this file in hex editor, you should see this:
3. edit the bytes as follows:
In other words:
4. Then delete the 4 "00" Bytes from 00000020 to 00000023, so result file should be 3064 Bytes long.
5. Make sure you have wrong file in Splat Pack and replace it with the one you have just fixed for C1. Note: Do not replace if size is different than 3068 Bytes!
That's it, you can enjoy the hires mode with regular DOS execs :) .
Edit: end of edit, please read :)
Just like the newer CR
:D
Also it is fixed in UCP - additional fixes and options.
For Steam / GOG you can use them both together, for CD version UCP only (C1).
To configure keys use CKB - start it from Windows (for C1 and C2, no matter if game is running inside or outside of DOSBox).
This font fix isn't required for 3dfx version, but allow to run software mode with non 3dfx execs.
About which version you are talking about and which exec and how you are try to run it?
I must go now, sorry.
