State Of The Game in 2026
Last time i played the game (in 2023), every time i would get near end game, the game would become unplayable because of constant 4-5 second freezes at the start of every month. I recently got the urge to play again and i want to buy a few DLCs next sale but only if the end game lag has been fixed or improved. What is the current state of the game and does it have any major problems. What DLCs would you recommend. I have utopia. apocalypse, leviathans, synthetic dawn, distant stars and ancient relic.

The performance is now significantly better especially in the endgame. They chaged the planet management again so you need to learn it again, but it is still similiar to the version of 2023.
You should buy at least The Machine Age, Biogenesis and Shadows of the Shroud, because all of them combined are basically Utopia 2.0. The original Uptopia, and Synthetic Dawn are nowadays basically useless and they will be integrated into the base game in may.
You can also buy Federations.
If you want to play as the Galatic Empire you need to buy Nemesis.
I am a dude who buys every DLC for the game.
The current state of the game is plate spinning simulator while the AI trips over nothing and fractures into a thousand pieces.
Make sure to claim the now free older DLC for Stellaris. Claim Utopia, Humanoids Species Pack, and Syrhentic Dawn Story Pack. I'm not sure how long the offer will be, but you should claim it so you can play them on older versions of the game in case there's a good modpack.

Oh That Make sense.
Game is more stable than ever in years but isn't fun due to recent economic changes.

Its never fun having to relearn but I figured it out after a couple hours fiddling around.
Here's my subjective DLC tier list:

Tier 1 DLCs - essential
- Utopia [NOTE: free since 2026-05 (part of the base game)]
- Synthetic Dawn [NOTE: free since 2026-05 (part of the base game)]
- Distant Stars
- Ancient Relics
- Grand Archive
- Galactic Paragons
- Federations
- The Machine Age
- Biogenesis
- Shadows of the Shroud

Tier 2 DLCs - good, but non-essential
- Megacorp
- First Contact
- Leviathans

Tier 3 DLCs - mostly only if you want to play with those
- Astral Planes
- Cosmic Storms
- Apocalypse
- Nemesis
- Overlord

Tier 4 DLCs - mostly new species, designs and origins
- Humanoids [NOTE: free since 2026-05 (part of the base game)]
- Anniversary Portraits [NOTE: free]
- Toxoids
- Aquatics
- Infernals
- Lithoids
- Necroids
- Plantoids

Tier 5 DLCs - safe to ignore
- Galaxy Edition Upgrade Pack (only cosmetic stuff)
- Rick The Cube Species Portrait
- Stargazer Species Portrait
- Soundtrack
- Infinite Frontiers (E-Book)
Thank you everyone for the feedback. I guess in the long run (excluding subscription), it would be cheaper if i bought the bundle with all remaining DLCs rather than buying a few every sale

Not for MP, desynchs galore again
The performance and stability situation is still bad. Since you left it in 2023, it had a few really bad patches and a whole year of performance "fixes" to bring it back to where it was before, so just run the game and see what it performs like on your machine. There's a big spread when it comes to this so you might be unaffected. Multiplayer reportedly has the worst time staying stable compared to singleplayer or playing with mods. Speaking of mods: you will need to check what broke and what didn't as many may have stopped working as they did before or become outdated.

In terms of mechanics, it's hard to explain but planet management is much more involved and economy numbers were crunched back down. There are more ways to interact with the AI but not all are fleshed out and some will feel superficial, especially espionage. Leaders, especially with the DLC, can have game-changing effects. The AI's poor planning, especially during and in the lead up to wars against you, is very obvious now compared to when you last played. Crises still (generally) stomp the AI completely, even on GA.

There's follow-up DLCs to the ones you bought and they all expand the ascension path mechanic significantly and add player crises and new origins that may be interesting for roleplaying. If you enjoy a specific empire type, please mention it and I'm sure people will respond with recommendations.
