Synaptic Lathe and Virtual Machine Empire
I've taken the Cosmogenesis ascension perk and built myself a Synaptic Lathe, but it keeps "burning out" and I have to decide between letting it collapse or "deploying fresh components" just to have the same prompt on the following day.

Is it because I've taken the Virtual ascension as the Machine Empire? if so, is there a workaround?

Unless it's a new bug it's not due to the ascension.
My last game I was a virtual machine empire and I kept the lathe with 40 pops so it would be stable.

I got to load right before completing it so I can try again, but It happened right after I built it, do I have to get it on a system with a populated Hab or planet?

You can't resettle virtual pops, so this is working as intended. The virtual pops on your other planets would just respawn after moving them to the lathe, that's why you can't move them.

The lathe always needs regular pops, lore-wise their brains are all connected as a super computer which kills (purges) them. Purge speed depends on how many pops you have there.

Get some pops from a different species, conquer them or something and you can send them to the lathe. With virtual you could grab a world from an enemy move all their pops to the lathe and then shut down the world...

Also if I remember right one of the species rights purge options will send 'undesirable' pops to the lathe to purge them.

So, I'd have to be in constant war to get planets and purge them straight to the Lethe so it doesn't crumble upon itself, right?

Actually the lathe doesn't kill the last couple pops, at least the fully upgraded one. So it can be put on standby as long as you have some non-virtual pops plugged in.

Only if you want to keep it above 40 pops

Pops on the lathe only start declining if the population if above 40.
