Since pops are king, why the xenophobic and purge memes?

Just curious I haven't been playing this game for a long time, but I dont think being a single species empire has any advantage whatsoever rn, is it just RP stuff or was there a time where purging was actually useful?

If you eat everyone else you have the most pops :D also when you eat other pops you breed like rabbits!

Also: Genocidal and Lots of pops are not mutually exclusive, just pick Fanatic Purifier Necrophage, you get to keep around 66% of the pops you purge, or an Exterminator with the Mechromancy AP.
