Mystery Hostile Fleet
I was playing a typical game, just having a good time, when out of nowhere an enemy fleet of 14.5K showed and blasted my neighbor's system. They then proceeded to attack throughout my empire, wiping out system after system. I received no hails, could not make contact with them. They just seemed intent on destroying everything in their path.

The only hint I had from where they had come from is that they originated in a system that had an astral rift in it. Is there a rift event that spawns a hostile fleet that just starts attacking everything around it at random? They didn't appear to be allied to anyone, and attacked anything that got in their way with seeming no discrimination.

Any help on figuring out what this fleet was would be appreciated.

Ship type would narrow it down. But that sounds like an average pirate raiding fleet size. They are neutral to everyone but there target though.
There is, besides the Crystal Rift, there's one rift that if failed, spawns a hostile fleet. The fleet is basically unknown to everyone and can't be hailed, spoken to or anything as such, they also typically don't have a pre-set ship design, just getting random ships usually with Psionic gear, depending at the stage of the game usually will result in larger fleets so it sounds like the AI did a rift and failed it and resulted in the hostile fleet

I admit I've never seen a pirate fleet that big. I didn't have a fleet big enough to fight them as I was already fighting a war on my other border so I wasn't able to get a good look at them. They looked like dark purple elongated crystals and they just traveled from system to system attacking anything and would stay in orbit above a planet until all pops had been exterminated.

That sounds like the fleet then. They just came outta no where and started blowing everything up. It was pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Completely threw me off because it happened on a border with an ally while I was fighting a war on my opposite border so I had no fleet forces big enough to even try countering them.

Ya the fleet can caught you completely off guard, the rift in of itself reminds me of a typical pirate ambush anomly that you can sometime get, the really annoying ones that where like 3 small ships can destroy an advanced races research ship even if its cloaked.

If you can glance around in the local systems, see if there's a finished rift icon on the map, that likely is where it started, as for the targets of the fleet, I think its completely random as the fleet by itself is just hostile with no real target in mind, I think it just goes from one system to the next.
