Some are harder than others and it also depends if the Crisis gains any ground. Some games they grow just because you cannot get to them due to restricted space of another empire. So by the time you vote for the Crisis declaration they already gained quite a bit.
I think I hate the Machine World one is the most @#$%ing annoying thing has eaten so many of shipyards when they spawn. Last time time it spawned when I had Crisis setting to All it spawned on my Shipyard station and ate it then proceeded to capture my capital in the next system. This was all in the span of like a few minutes, before my fleets could even return, well because it ate my gateway to shipyards and capital, lol.
Crisis difficulty is like all over the place if you use all. Like the scourge came in with 50-100k fleet, and a decade or so after the machine worlds came in with 150k fleets.
Otherwise your game is done since there's nothing left to do other than wait for the victory year if you want the game to officially end.
I think it's more like the crises just haven't been updated in a really long time.
The player has gotten more tools to improve their economy and the AI has gotten *significantly* better at managing their own economy, so the overall strength of the galaxy has just outpaced them.
I've played against a x25 crisis on GA starting after 2325, that was a hell of a challenge, 100 years of war until I got rid of all the planets, same settings starting after 2350 and another game after 2400 and I just trampled over them with zero losses and finished their invasion instantly in a single move.
Even a x1 crisis can be challenging, if you set the late game to start before 2300.
But yeah, even the AI is trashing the crisis on 100% standard settings, I was playing a GA game last week, around 2350 when a x1 crisis spawned and one small vassal I had was right next to their spawning point, before I could even get there the vassal killed them all.
This same vassal had destroyed 2 fallen empires before I managed to vassalize him too, so these "late game challenges" are quite lacking when vassal AIs can parade around with half a dozen 150k power fleets.
Sounds like you just need to up the crisis difficulty.
The crisis at 1x was never a challenge with even a half-decent idea of what you're doing.
